A small Sydney deli is selling a $9.50 sandwich that’s so decadent it has brought actual tears to the eyes of those who’ve tasted it. But you’ll need to get in quick, as it’s only sold in limited supply on select days of the week.
Marani Deli in Newtown sells a Le Goûter, which is a sweet sandwich snack comprising an excellent baguette, thickly sliced butter and a beautiful piece of chocolate.
Alex Grenouiller, owner of Marani Deli, explained to Daily Mail that Le Goûter is a beloved ‘after-school snack we all grew up with in France, enjoyed at around 4.30pm’.
‘Traditionally, it was a buttered piece of baguette or a slice of those big country-style loaves of bread and a few squares of chocolate.
‘It really is something iconic within French food culture.’
To do his childhood favourite justice, Alex explained that his store’s take on Le Goûter uses generous proportions of the absolute finest quality ingredients.
‘Our Le Goûter is made of a rustic baguette roll from Victoire Boulangerie, a French bakery in the Sydney suburb of Rozelle,’ Alex said.
‘Then, we add a thick piece of Le Conquérant Beurre de Baratte d’Isigny, a salted cultured butter from Normandy in France.’

‘To finish, we add a slab of Valrhona chocolate from the Rhône Valley in France.’
When it comes to the filling, customers have a choice between either milk chocolate or dark chocolate.
‘It’s simple, only three ingredients, but I’d say I’ve probably sourced the best quality options for each of those items,’ Alex explained.
Although renowned as an ‘after-school snack’ in France, customers will need to stop by the inner-city Sydney store much earlier in the day. A Le Goûter sells for $9.50 and is only available Thursday to Sunday – and is notorious for selling out.
In addition to the popular sweet treat, the store also offers an array of tasty savoury sandwiches on those same days, served on either French rustic baguette, Italian panino or rosette. Alex explains that customers can enjoy their sandwich ‘with a glass of wine seated either at the corner table inside the store or outside in the sun’.
Up until now, the sandwich has been an ‘if you know, you know’ foodie secret.
But Sydney-based hospitality wares group Worktones recently outed the delight in a social media video, which notched up over 296,000 views on their TikTok account.
‘Bread, salted butter and chocolate. It’s the treat Alex from Marani Deli in Newtown grew up on in France and wow. The perfect bite,’ reads the video caption.

The clip shows the Worktones team stopping by the deli to try Alex’s signature sweet chocolate sandwich for themselves.
As they take a bite, one of the Worktones staff declares, ‘there’s a lot of emotions right now.’
‘A tear rolls down my cheeks. It’s so beautiful,’ another adds. ‘It’s everything I hoped and dreamed for.’
The video’s comments section erupted with enthusiastic responses.
‘That’s my death row meal,’ one woman declared.
‘Um, where has this been all my life?’ another added.
One Melbourne woman lamented: ‘Why is this in Sydney and not Melbourne?!’
Several people who had previously lived in France also confirmed in the replies that this snack was exactly what they ate as kids.

‘Awwww my French mum used to do the same!’ read one reply.
‘Literally what we had at school pick up in Paris.’
‘Definitely one of my favourite French treats,’ a third agreed.
One woman fondly recalled: ‘I was given a baguette filled with butter and chocolate after an exhausting morning of grape picking in France. Served with a coffee so strong, I thought my head would fly off. It remains one of my favourite food moments.’
Another Aussie recounted, ‘My fav thing about my exchange to France was eating chocolate with bread for afternoon tea! I would put choc chips on bread rolls when I got home but it wasn’t quite the same!’
Marani Deli has been operating in Newtown for two years, with owner Alex explaining that he created the store to honour his French family heritage. Even the store logo is inspired by the old ceramic kitchen tiles from his grandmother’s kitchen door.
