Henri to turn north and aim for New England landfall

While the exact timing and impacts depend on the the storm turns, experts expect Henri to make landfall as a hurricane in the coming days.

Accuweather, Accuweather

A tropical storm warning is now in effect for the Monmouth County coastline as Hurricane Henri makes its way north according to the latest briefing on Tropical Storm Henri from the National Hurricane Center

Hurricane Henri was 465 miles south of Montauk Point, New York, as of 11 a.m., the time of the center’s briefing.

The storm currently has maximum sustained winds near 75 mph with higher gusts. Henri strengthened Saturday morning to a hurricane. Although some weakening is expected prior to landfall on Sunday, Henri is forecast to be at or near hurricane strength when it reaches the coasts of Long Island and southern New England.

The center issued a tropical storm warning for coastal New York and New Jersey west of East Rockaway Inlet to Manasquan Inlet, including New York City. The warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area within 36 hours.

Storm surges of 1 to 3 feet are expected for the entire New Jersey coastline and dangerous swells that could cause life-threatening surf and rip currents.

Minor coastal flooding is expected for portions of the New Jersey coast with this evening’s high tide. Minor tidal flooding may linger with the high tide on Sunday evening.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecast wave heights along the Monmouth County coastline will start building to 8 feet by tonight and reach 9 feet on Sunday before starting to diminish tomorrow afternoon.

South of Manasquan Inlet on the New Jersey coast, the forecast is for wave heights to reach a maximum height of 8 feet by tomorrow morning before starting to subside in the afternoon.

Henri is expected to produce rainfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches in northern New Jersey Sunday into Monday, with isolated maximum totals near 10 inches. Heavy rainfall from Henri may result in considerable flash, urban, and small stream flooding, along with the potential for widespread minor and isolated moderate river flooding.
