Willow fights the Crone's forces

Disney+ has released Willow: Behind the Magic, which details the making of the show and a funny running gag that occurs constantly off-screen.

When Disney+ announced a Willow TV series, passionate fans were concerned if it would live up to expectations and flesh out the kingdom of Tir Asleen even more than the 1988 movie. Since Warwick Davis returned as the titular character, it did exactly that, as well as bring in a diverse, vibrant young cast for the modern era. This time, they went up against Queen Bavmorda’s evil boss, the Crone. The journey also involved a grown-up Elora Danan (Ellie Bamber) trying to ward off the dark forces.

Throughout Willow’s eight-episode run, fans got a visual spectacle, with this medieval fantasy upping the magical ante of old, backed by the creative genius of Lucasfilm and Industrial Light & Magic. To top off the successful debut season, Disney+ released a short documentary on the making of the show — Willow: Behind the Magic — and while it recaps the process behind the camera, it also reveals the franchise’s best joke that wasn’t included in the series.

Willow: Behind the Magic Reveals a Diva

The running gag behind the scenes revolves around Davis having a diva persona. This part of the special is all tongue-in-cheek, of course, coming off like a mockumentary as the creatives — including Willow showrunner Jon Kasdan — reveal how Davis’ intensity, passion and ego were quite challenging. When Davis himself takes the chair, he’s quite arrogant, repeatedly making it known it’s his show, and he has to be the focal point.

He makes fun of the cast, mispronouncing names, like Ruby Cruz (who played Kit) as Robin, leaving them intimidated and weirded out. Even Willow director Ron Howard’s taken aback, with concerned parties cognizant how fame went to Davis’ head. It’s hilarious, though, knowing Davis isn’t like this. Still, him talking about how he became a superstar after Star Wars, how he rolled with the British Royal Family, and how he came up with ridiculous ideas for Willow sequels, including Willow: Lost in New York (a spoof of Home Alone 2), are all comedic, meme-worthy gold.

Willow: Where Is Elora Danan, and Why Is She in Hiding

Apparently, Davis did get more personal with a couple actors. He had beef with Bamber, breaking her wands secretly, locking her in trailers, so she couldn’t make photo ops. He even failed to pick her up so she’d arrive late on set. It made him being a control freak even darker, as Davis sabotaged things to ensure the story would remain about his Willow, and not Elora. Some might even say it’s a bit of revenge for the Meet the Cast video from a year ago, when Davis poked fun at the crew, while most of them seemed oblivious to the movie and its popularity in the 1980s.

However, Davis wasn’t just a jerk to the newbies; he had issues with Christian Slater, who played Allagash, a friend of Madmartigan. Davis claims Slater stole his idea for Pump Up the Volume, going so far as to leave him a threatening voicemail regarding a lawsuit. Nonetheless, they ended up working together, with Davis feigning being cool with Slater on-set. The fact Slater plays along with the gag makes it even better, to the point some individuals may actually think Davis is a diva. Ultimately, the joke is marvelously strewn into the interviews, making the stories about the creative process so much more interesting, as it’s clear the gang is a family off-screen as well — which is sure to leave more fans craving Willow Season 2.
