fire star hellfire gala

The X-Men have officially elected a new team, codifying a reoccurring element of the Hellfire Gala. For the most part, the new roster makes perfect sense given the current status quo for mutant teams. But one member of the group comes as something of a surprise — and could become far more important than anyone realizes.

Firestar is among the mutants elected to the X-Men in X-Men: Hellfire Gala #1 (by Gerry Duggan, Kris Anka, Russell Dauterman, Matteo Lolli, CF Villa, Rain Beredo, Frank Martin, Matt Milla, Matthew Wilson and VC’s Cory Petit), and she might end up being the Avengers confidant in Krakoa.

Among the many revelations and discoveries made during the course of the Hellfire Gala, one of the most public is the new X-Men roster. Following a year-long stint on the team, some members — Sunfire, Rogue, Wolverine, and Polaris (whose adventures were largely off-panel), decide to take a leave of absence. While Cyclops, Marvel Girl and Synch are quickly and easily re-elected, the other successful candidates include Magik, Forge, Havok, Iceman, and Firestar. For the most part, this largely makes sense. The former four are all important figures in Krakoa and have been prominently featured in other X-titles like New Mutants, X-Force, Hellions and Marauders respectively. But as Firestar notes earlier in the issue, the younger mutants of Krakoa don’t have as much respect for her — and she hasn’t had much reason to become a part of the modern X-nation.

Despite being a mutant gifted with control over microwave radiation, Firestar has primarily been associated with other groups — including the New Warriors and the Avengers. Even though she briefly served as a member of Wolverine’s Amazing X-Men, she’s rarely been associated with the mutants over the other pockets of the Marvel Universe. She does have her ties to the mutant community though, most notably, Emma Frost (when she became an early student of the then still-villainous White Queen). Despite Firestar’s dislike for Emma, Frost is clearly saddened by their relationship, making Firestar the X-Man who could turn her back into an ally. But this could backfire for Krakoa in some serious ways.

It’s ultimately Emma’s vote of confidence that earns Firestar a place on the team. On one hand, it’s a great moment for the character. A fan-favorite since her debut as a part of the Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends animated series, Firestar becoming a member of the X-Men could be a great new chapter in her life. It’s also a strong move in-universe by Emma. But Tony Stark (increasingly wary of the X-Men and their recent activities) makes sure to remind Firestar of her Avengers roots. He tells her to effectively act as their eyes and ears in the group — leaving Firestar stuck between a rock and hard place. Firestar might quietly be one of the most uniquely important mutants in the near future.

With the Avengers and X-Men growing tenser and their war with the Eternals about to explode, Firestar’s place as a friend to all heroes and loyalty to potentially none, puts her in a position to turn the tide in any number of conflicts. If she loses faith in the X-Men and Krakoa, she could be a key witness for the Avengers and set off a chain reaction that leads to the kind of battle the mutants are already preparing for. She could find her true mutant pride and become a more pronounced X-Men character, making a symbolic point in choosing mutants over humans. She could even possibly become a peace-broker between the two, using her ties to both teams to keep things from escalating out of control. Firestar’s place on the X-Men gives her the perfect opportunity to betray Krakoa — or to become its most unlikely savior.
