Spider-Man trilogy star Kirsten Dunst has some unpleasant memories of working on the film, but she’s still open to returning to the genre.
In 2002’s Spider-Man, which was directed by Sam Raimi and starred Tobey Maguire as the titular web-slinger, Kirsten Dunst was introduced in the role of Mary Jane Watson. She would appear in the 2004 and 2007 sequels before moving on to other genres. In a new interview for Marie Claire, Dunst took a moment to reflect on the Spider-Man films, revealing how one nickname she’d been given on the set made her uncomfortable. Dunst now wishes she would have spoken up at the time, but suggested that as a young woman in Hollywood many years before the MeToo era, she thought at the time that she had no choice but to take it.

10 Spider-Man Storylines That Will Never Work on the Big Screen
Over half a century’s worth of Spider-Man stories await adaptation as movies, but some of Marvel’s web-swinging adventures aren’t ready for Hollywood.
As Dunst explained, “It was a joke, but on Spider-Man, they would call me ‘girly-girl’ sometimes on the walkie-talkie. ‘We need girly-girl [on the set].’ But I never said anything, like, ‘Don’t call me that.’ You didn’t say anything. You just took it.”
Would Kirsten Dunst Return to Superhero Movies?
One question that remains is if Dunst would ever head back to the superhero movie realm. If so, she’d be following her team from the Spider-Man trilogy, given how former co-star Tobey Maguire returned as his version of Peter Parker in the hit film Spider-Man: No Way Home. Director Sam Raimi also returned to Marvel by helming the sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. When asked if she’d consider revisiting the genre, Dunst said she would be up for it, given how much the paycheck would benefit her family.

Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man 4 May Finally Happen, Franchise Star Says
Thomas Haden Church reveals all he knows about Sam Raimi’s rumored sequel Spider-Man 4.
“Yes, because you get paid a lot of money, and I have two children, and I support my mother,” Dunst said when directly asked if she’d do another superhero film.
Kirsten Dunst also explained how it was intentional for her to step away from the genre after Spider-Man 3. She said she didn’t want to “capitalize off the Spider-Man thing,” because that would have made her a “movie-star-movie-star.” By that, Dunst suggested that she may have become too famous in Hollywood, which may have prevented her from being up for the roles she really wanted to dive into.
“That’s great for some people,” Dunst said. “It’s not the artist that I want to be.“
Spider-Man is currently streaming on Disney+. As for where to see Dunst next, she is one of the stars of Alex Garland’s new war drama Civil War, which hits theaters on April 12.
