While Jeff grew up somewhere in South Florida. He developed an interest in filmmaking at a young age, and after matriculating from high school, he enrolled into New York University. Development and Film Projects

Realizing that writing is a big part of filmmaking, Baena left his work with Zemeckis to become an assistant editor for director and writer David O. Russell, known for his work on the biographical film “The Fighter”, and the commercially successful “Silver Linings Playbook”. He also created “American Hustle” – his career has seen him gain three nominations for Academy Awards.

Jeff worked and trained with Russell for over a year, which led to several collaborations, such as the film “I Heart Huckabees” which was released in 2004 as an independent project and starred Dustin Hoffman.

He also pursued other writing projects, including working on the film “Life After Beth” – which also became his directing debut – starring Aubrey Plaza, and is the final film project of Garry Marshall. Following the completion of that film, he then directed “Joshy” which was intended to be his debut, but was delayed due to Adam Pally leaving the project. One of his latest films is entitled “The Little Hours”, which stars Alison Brie and Dave Franco, and was inspired by the Giovanni Boccaccio collection called “The Decameron”.

Partner – Aubrey Plaza

Aubrey Plaza made her foray into the entertainment industry in comedy sketches and improvisational shows, working as a part of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. She took on many acting projects, eventually gaining one of his biggest roles in the situational comedy “Parks and Recreation”, in which she played the character April Ludgate for six years.

While working on the show, she had a lot of notable supporting roles in popular film projects, such as “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”, and lent her voice for “Monsters University”.

She also appeared alongside Robert De Niro in “Dirty Grandpa”, and in 2017 became one of the regular cast members of the FX series “Legion”. The show is based on the Marvel character of the same name, who is a mutant suffering from schizophrenia. The show has gained a lot of critical acclaim for its story telling and use of narrative, which depends on the main character being an unreliable point of focus. It completed its run of three seasons in 2019.

Personal Life

Jeff began dating Aubrey Plaza in 2011, and since then the two have often collaborated professionally. They live together and apparently manage to maintain a good relationship even with Plaza’s inclination as a bisexual. Prior to their relationship, Aubrey was with other notable names such as Michael Cera and John Gallagher Jr. The two have shown no signs of tying the knot any time soon. During his free time, Jeff plays a lot of tennis, and is a member of The Interstate 5 Tennis Association.

While most couples dread working together, Plaza has been in each of her partner’s projects, as she admitted that she is a crucial part in creating many of his film ideas. Despite their long term relationship, they’ve managed to keep most details away from the public except for a few posts online such as birthday greetings or a few mentions during interviews of projects they’ve worked on together. Their inclination towards the creative side of filmmaking has helped them connect deeply, and some of Plaza’s most memorable roles have come from Jeff’s films. They respect each other’s work and know how to collaborate without going over each of their boundaries, which has helped in the development of their respective careers.
