Conservative radio show host Larry Elder is running for the Governor of California and seems to have more support behind him than we originally thought.

According to Elder himself, he has raised almost $4.5 million in just the first 19 days of announcing his bid to replace California Governor Gavin Newsom in the special recall election scheduled for September 14th.

The total, according to his campaign, includes contributions received “from July 12, 2021, the day Elder announced his candidacy, to July 31, 2021, the end of the latest reporting period.” The team explained that 46,000 donors have backed him with their financial support, making the average donation $84.00.

According to Politico, “In mere weeks, his total eclipsed what fellow Republicans had raised in months, and daily filings show Elder has pulled in another $440,000 in the first few days of August.”

“The numbers announced by my campaign today solidify my candidacy to defeat Gavin Newsom in the upcoming recall election,” Elder said in a statement on Thursday. “Californians have shown up and believe in our mission to recall Newsom and elect me in his place. Newsom can raise an unlimited amount of funds for this election; therefore, every single donation to my campaign counts, whether small or large.”

Check out what else Politico reported:

The highest-raising Republican contenders registered hauls in the low millions, while Newsom has raised at least $45 million since the start of 2021. All told, Republicans have cumulatively raised a fraction of Newsom’s stash, which has allowed the governor to dominate the airwaves this summer and puts him in position to continue running ads statewide in the roughly five weeks left before the Sept. 14 election…

Elder provided a copy of his statement showing topline numbers, but his campaign said his forms aren’t on the California secretary of state’s website because the system was clogged at Thursday night’s deadline. Likewise, Newsom’s forms weren’t showing up accurately as of Friday morning…

Newsom enjoys a singular edge over his GOP rivals: campaign finance rules allow the incumbent governor to raise unlimited sums of money because state law treats the question of whether to oust Newsom as a ballot issue rather than a candidate race. That has allowed Newsom to lap the Republican field, drawing on a panoply of deep-pocketed backers across the worlds of organized labor, Hollywood, tech, agriculture, Native American casinos, and real estate.

Newsom is feeling the heat as he is facing a recall effort after he completely mishandled the COVID-19 pandemic. During a Zoom call on Thursday, Newsom lashed out against recall contender and conservative radio talk show host Larry Elder who is challenging Newsom in the election.

“Newsom’s attack acknowledges Elder, a popular figure who has never run for public office before, as the leading threat to his tenure,” Breitbart reported. “Several recent polls show voters increasingly prepared to recall Newsom; the most recent showed a majority of likely California voters were prepared to remove Newsom from office — a reversal from earlier this year.”

The Los Angeles Times reported:

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday attacked the Republican topping the field of candidates trying to replace him in the September recall election, calling conservative talk show host Larry Elder a climate change denier who would restrict abortion rights and end the minimum wage if elected.

For months Newsom has criticized the recall effort as the handiwork of far-right supporters of former President Trump and a Republican Party intent on undermining his election in 2018, shying away from personal attacks on the candidates hoping to take his place in Sacramento.

But in a Zoom call with volunteers working on his anti-recall campaign, Newsom hit out at Elder, calling him a major Trump supporter — a rallying cry in a state won overwhelmingly by President Biden in the 2020 presidential election. Newsom also accused Elder of being a threat to abortion rights established under the landmark Roe vs. Wade U.S. Supreme Court decision in 1973.
