World’s best female footballer Alexia Putellas is ruled OUT of Euro 2022 on the eve of the tournament after rupturing her ACL in training… leaving tournament favourites Spain reeling as England prepare to kick-off TONIGHT

Spain have been dealt a catastrophic blow on the eve of Euro 2022 after star player Alexia Putellas was ruled out of the tournament.

Putellas, who was named the FIFA Best Women’s Player earlier this year, was at the heart of the Barcelona women’s team which won the Spanish league and finished runners-up in the Champions League.

The 28-year-old, who was the top scorer in the Champions League with 11 goals last season, was expected to play a huge role for Spain this summer.

But Spain’s captain will play no part in the tournament after suffering a serious knee injury in training.

The Spanish Football Federation said: ‘The tests carried out on the Spanish international on the afternoon of this Tuesday, July 5, 2022, at King Edward VII’s hospital in London, have confirmed that the captain of the Spanish Women’s National Team suffers a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee.’

The 28-year-old will be a huge absence for Spain at the tournament, which starts with the opening game between hosts England and Austria at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Putellas is the second Spain player to get injured ahead of the Euros.

Forward Jennifer Hermoso has also been ruled out of the competition after she was diagnosed with a grade two sprain of the lateral ligament in her right knee.

Spain are one of the favourites to lift the trophy on July 31 and begin their campaign against Finland in Milton Keynes on Friday.

Their second game will be against Germany at the Brentford Community Stadium in London on July 12 before they play Denmark – who will be making their return to international competition after failing to qualify for the 2019 World Cup – in their final group clash on July 16.

Spain are touted as the favourites to win the tournament despite failing to progress beyond the quarter-finals in either 2013 or 2017.
