Arsenal attacker Kai Havertz is not expected to be out for an extended period with the injury he suffered at Old Trafford

Arsenal attacker Kai Havertz will reportedly undergo surgery on his knee injury but is not expected to be side-lined for an extended period.

The Germany international suffered the knock on the opening day of the season at Old Trafford, sparking fears he could be set to miss months of action.

But his issue is not as serious as Gunners supporters no-doubt feared, the club have confirmed, with Havertz due to undergo surgery soon.

While the exact length of his absence has not yet been determined, the 26-year-old will not be out for a ‘lengthy’ period.

After the Arsenal No 29 was left out of his national team’s squad for their upcoming World Cup Qualifiers next month, Germany’s team director Rudi Voller revealed that the star may well require to surgery.

‘He certainly won’t make it, he has a knee injury,’ Voller said.

‘We don’t know exactly how it will go in the coming weeks, whether surgery is upcoming or it will be treated conservatively.’

Havertz endured a campaign disrupted by injury as Arsenal recorded a third consecutive second-placed finish under Mikel Arteta last season.

During a mid-season training camp in Dubai back in February, he pulled up with a hamstring injury leaving Arteta without a recognised striker.

After subsequently undergoing surgery for the issue, Havertz was spent three months on the side-lines before returning to make cameo appearances off the bench in the club’s final two Premier League games of the season.

The positive news regarding the German’s injury today will come as a relief to Gunners boss Arteta, who is yet to find out the extent of captain Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka’s injuries.

The Arsenal talesmen were both forced off during their 5-0 thumping of Leeds at The Emirates on the weekend, leaving the Spaniard with something of a threadbare front line.

Odegaard has however been included in Norway’s squad to face Finland and Moldova during the international break, meaning the 26-year-old’s knock likely isn’t serious.

It remains to be seen whether Odegaard and Saka will return in time for their side’s trip to Anfield on Sunday.

Mikel Arteta holds a press conference ahead of the top of the table clash on Friday.
