Hickey was also a target for Serie A giants Napoli.

Hickey made a £1.5m move from Hearts to Bologna in September 2020 despite a rival offer from Bayern Munich.

Since then, the full-back has played more first-team minutes than any other teenager currently plying his trade in a major league, with Arsenal, Newcastle and Aston Villa also credited with an interest.

Should a move go through it is understood Hearts will earn a fixed fee less than they might have raked in had they negotiated for a percentage of the sale proceeds.

Hickey won Bologna’s Golden Boy award in his first season with the club and has continued to improve this season, picking up five goals from 34 league appearances.

Bees boss Thomas Frank sees Hickey as a good target to help bolster his squad to have an improved Premier League season.

Brentford are also advancing in their bid to sign exciting Hull City forward Keane Lewis-Potter after making an offer worth up to £20m for the 21-year-old.
