Burnley are RELEGATED from the Premier League on the penultimate week of the season after defeat at Tottenham confirms their fate

Burnley join Sheffield United in becoming a ‘one and done’ Premier League side following their relegation from the top flight.

Vincent Kompany’s side were dealt a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham on Saturday which sealed their fate inside the bottom three of the Premier League for the campaign.

Going into Saturday’s match at Tottenham, the Clarets were in the most precarious position behind relegation-threatened rivals Luton Town and Nottingham Forest.

Burnley’s 4-1 home defeat by Newcastle last Saturday left them five points from safety with a goal difference that is 17 worse than Forest’s. 

Kompany’s side had to win in the capital and hope Chelsea win at the City Ground – but that second scenario proved irrelevant after losing to Spurs.

They made a dream start by taking a surprise lead but goals from Pedro Porro and Micky van de Ven extinguished hopes of a great escape as Burnley now start planning for life back in the second tier. 

Jacob Bruun Larsen had struck for the Clarets in the first-half but Spurs’ defenders fired back to ensure that Burnley will play in the Championship next season. 

Following the defeat in north London, they find themselves 19th in the table – two points behind Luton and five points behind Forest. 

Rob Edwards’ side can also be relegated on Saturday if Forest pick up at least a point when they take on Chelsea. 

Their goal difference is 13 superior to Luton’s as well, meaning that their safety is practically guaranteed, even if they fall to defeat in their final two games.

Micky van de Ven struck late on to earn victory for the hosts and, in turn, send Burnley down

Burnley, meanwhile, join Sheffield United back in the Championship for the 2024-25 campaign after struggling in the top-flight this season. 

The Clarets have won just five of their 37 games in the top-flight this season and have fallen to defeat on 23 those occasions. 

Fans will be somewhat disappointed with their performance in the league this season, after their impressive campaign in the Championship last season.

Kompany’s side looked best prepared for the top-flight arrival, however, just two league wins in 2024 has sent them back down.
