Jay Rodriguez can be Burnley’s lucky charm for their Boxing Day clash against Liverpool.

The two clubs are at opposite ends of the Premier League table but 34-year-old Rodriguez has scored against Liverpool for three different clubs and provided the assist when Southampton beat Jurgen Klopp’s side to reach the Carabao Cup final in 2017.

He has been on the winning side against them five times, as many times as he has lost.

‘You do look and realise you do well against certain teams,’ says Burnley’s hometown hero, who grew up as both a fan and ball boy for the Clarets.

‘My favourite memory was scoring twice at the Kop End for West Brom in the FA Cup. You dream as a kid of playing in stadiums like Anfield.

‘To hear You’ll Never Walk Alone before kick off was spine-tingling so to get the goals and win the was a surreal moment.

‘But you can’t say playing Liverpool is an easy thing or anything like that. This will be one of the toughest games of the season though it’s also what you want. To play against the best in the world.’

Burnley have recruited young players from all over the world leaving Rodriguez the task of helping newcomers learn about this passionate part of Lancashire.
