Everton have interviewed former Italy defender Fabio Cannavaro for their vacant manager role, according to reports.

Sportsmail revealed earlier this week that Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard are both being considered as Rafa Benitez’s replacement at Goodison Park, after reports claimed that both former England internationals had also been interviewed by the club.

World Cup-winning defender Cannavaro has been a manager since 2014, with most of his experience coming in the Chinese Super League along with a short stint with Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.

The Toffees are looking for a new manager after Benitez’s (above) sacking this month

And according to The Sun, Cannavaro is the latest manager to have talks with the Toffees hierarchy as they look for a manager capable for taking them away from the bottom of the Premier League table.

Cannavaro’s first role after retiring from his playing days was a stint at Chinese side Guangzhou Evergrande, but lasted less than a year as the club sacking him to bring in Luiz Felipe Scolari.

The 48-year-old then had a stint at Al-Nassr in November 2015 but lasted less than four months there, winning just six out of his 16 matches in charge.

The Italian then spent just over a season at Tianjin Quanjian back in China, winning the country’s second tier in 2016, before leaving them to return to Guangzhou.

Cannavaro spent nearly four years there in his second stint at the club, winning the Chinese FA Cup in 2018 and the Super League in 2019. He was also named the Chinese FA Coach of the Year in 2017.

During his playing days, the Italian had a stellar career in the upper echelons of the European game and was known as one of the best centre-backs of his generation.

He was best known for making nearly 300 appearances for Parma but also had sizeable stints for Juventus and Real Madrid, winning two LaLiga titles with the latter. Cannavaro also captained Italy to the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Having failed in their attempts to lure ex-boss Roberto Martinez, now at Belgium, Everton have started looking at alternatives after confirming Duncan Ferguson as caretaker manager for their ‘upcoming games’ earlier this week.

Former Everton midfielder Rooney, who came through the club’s academy and underwent two spells at Goodison Park as a first-team player, is currently at Championship club Derby who are in the relegation zone of the second tier.

The Rams were deducted 21 points earlier this season due to financial irregularities but Rooney has given the club a fighting chance of survival, winning four out of their last five league games to lift them up to 14 points.

Derby, however, are still eight points 21st-placed Reading in the lowest Championship safety spot having played a game more than the Royals – while the club also face the possibility of liquidation in just a fortnight’s time.

But Rooney, who is Manchester United and England’s all-time record goalscorer, could be offered a way out at Pride Park should he be handed the Everton role.

His former England team-mate Lampard, meanwhile, has been out of a job since being sacked by Chelsea 12 months ago.

The 43-year-old, who used to coach Derby, took the Blues into the Champions League in his first ever season as a Premier League manager but was sacked when the club were sitting in ninth place this time last year.

Lampard has remained out of the game since then, with his only public appearance in football coming as a Euro 2020 pundit on England games for the BBC.

As Sportsmail revealed this week, talks to appoint former Toffees boss Martinez have stalled after the club failed to reach an agreement with the Belgian FA.

The Spaniard, who has been Belgium manager since 2016, has a £2million release clause in his contract and would bring Thierry Henry in as an assistant manager.
