Dominic Calvert-Lewin was sent off during Everton's FA Cup third round tie with Crystal Palace

Everton fans have slammed the decision to give Dominic Calvert-Lewin a red card in their FA Cup clash with Crystal Palace.

The striker was sent off following a VAR review after a sliding challenge in which he did appear to win the ball.

Former boxer and Everton fan Tony Bellew led the criticism saying it was a ‘disgraceful’ decision.

Bellew wrote on Twittert: ‘DISGRACEFUL!! Never ever a red card.. wins the ball and it’s actually a great tackle!’

Seamus Coleman meanwhile told reporters after the goalless draw: ‘Slow it down like, it’s always gonna look worse. From my view it’s a great tackle…for me it’s not a red card.’

Jamie O’Hara ripped into VAR in his own message on social media saying that ‘the game has been ruined by VAR’ and that Calvert-Lewin’s sending off was an ‘absolute joke’.

Adam Catterall meanwhile referenced legendary Liverpool manager Bill Shankly with the quote ‘Football is a simple game complicated by idiots’.

He added: ‘Bill Shankly knew then what we’re all experiencing now.

‘The game is in serious danger of losing a whole generation of fans because of its ludicrous persistence with VAR.’
