Former Newcastle United midfielder Danny Guthrie has bagged a new job three years after finishing his playing career

Former Liverpool and Newcastle United star Danny Guthrie has bagged himself a new job in Dubai despite being declared bankrupt just three years ago.

The 38-year-old, who progressed through Manchester United’s academy, called time on his football career in 2022 after turning out for Southampton, Bolton Wanderers, Newcastle United, and Blackburn Rovers amongst others.

But less than a year after he hung his boots up, Guthrie was declared bankrupt after paying back a hefty gambling debt, the BBC reported in 2022.

It came after the Shrewsbury-born star borrowed £75,000 from a businessman friend to pay off his expenses, with Guthrie promising that he would pay the loan back after the selling his house.

However once the property was eventually sold a year later, the footballer used the money to pay off the £120,000 he owed in bets.

The friend was eventually left with ‘no choice’ but to make Guthrie bankrupt, with the footballer accepting a six-year order at Stoke County Court lasting until May 2028.

It left Guthrie under a number of restrictions, including not being able to borrow more than £500 without disclosing his bankruptcy. He also cannot become a company director without the court’s permission.

However despite such restrictions, the former footballer has bagged himself an impressive new job in Dubai.

He was appointed as the technical director of Al Hadha Football Academy in the United Arab Emirates earlier this month, sharing his excitement upon securing the role with a statement.

‘I’m delighted to have joined Al Hadha to share my experience and my knowledge with the next generation.

‘I feel that it is my duty and I can’t wait to get started. The academy has huge ambitions and I’m really, really proud to be a part of it.’

Since his financial troubles, Guthrie has relocated to the tax-free haven of Dubai and taken up a number of roles in football.

He’s provided coaching through his own The Overachievers’ Club initiative as well as being unveiled as a coach at UAE club IFG Phoenix earlier this year.
