Ferguson has attended Old Trafford and some away games regularly since his departure from United in 2013.

Meanwhile, Ferdinand left the Red Devils a year later to join QPR before turning to punditry on TNT Sports shortly after retirement.

The pair met in person for the first time in a while at Carington ahead of the visit of Everton and Ferdinand was delighted to see his former boss.

In a heartwarming clip posted by TNT Sports, Ferdinand said: ‘Boss! I can’t believe you’ve come to see me, lovely to see you. How are you doing? You look well.

‘I only normally talk to you on the text now, I don’t normally see you.’

The pair then headed through sliding door to greet long-time receptionist Kath.

Ferdinand then told Kath: ‘You didn’t greet me like that, Kath! What’s going on here?’

Kath replied: ‘Of course I did.’

Ferguson joked: ‘Do you know who he is? That’s what gave me the white hair!’

Ferdinand was signed by Ferguson from Leeds for a world transfer fee for a defender in 2002 and would go on to play 455 times for United.

The 45-year-old enjoyed plenty of success under the Scotsman, winning six league titles, two leagues cups and the Champions League in 2008.
