Scott McTominay reportedly phoned Rasmus Hojlund to try and convince him to sign for Napoli

Former Manchester United star Scott McTominay reportedly phoned Rasmus Hojlund this weekend in an attempt to convince the striker to sign for Napoli.

Hojlund has endured a frustrating time at United since joining in 2023 and could depart Old Trafford before the closure of the transfer window.

The 22-year-old hasn’t been included in the matchday squad for United’s first two Premier League games of the campaign.

In total he has scored 26 goals in 95 appearances for United across all competitions.

Hojlund has been heavily linked with a move away from United, with the signing of Benjamin Sesko pushing him further down the pecking order at the club, while Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have also joined this summer.

Denmark international Hojlund has also been linked with AC Milan but Napoli appears a more likely destination.

Hojlund and McTominay played 34 matches together for United. McTominay provided an assist for Hojlund to score against Copenhagen in the Champions League in 2023.

According to Corriere Dello Sport, Napoli are open to signing Hojlund with an obligation to buy rather than an option.

The report suggests that United could be persuaded by a €5million (£4.3m) loan deal with a mandatory buy option for an additional €40m (£34.5m).

McTominay signed for Napoli last year and helped the club to win the Serie A title last season as he scored 12 goals in 34 league games.

On Saturday McTominay opened his account for this season as he found the net against Sassuolo.

There have been concerns over whether Napoli would be able to afford Hojlund’s wages given that he is reportedly demanding around €6.5m (£5m) a year.

Napoli are interested in Hojlund following an injury to former United striker Romelu Lukaku.
