Frank Lampard remains a contender to become Coventry’s next boss with the club hopeful of making an appointment by the weekend.

The former Chelsea and England midfielder is firmly in the thoughts of owner Doug King though is not the sole candidate, with at least one other boss interviewed at the start of this week.

King was determined to take his time over the appointment after sacking Mark Robins on November 7.

Robins had been in charge of the Sky Blues for more than seven years, leading them from League Two to within a penalty kick of the Premier League, and his departure sparked fury among supporters.

King was due to speak to a mixture of British and overseas coaches before making his final decision, though Lampard is now thought to be one of only three names in the frame.

He will also take advice from performance director Dr Claire-Marie Roberts and head of recruitment Dean Austin.

Lampard took Derby to within 90 minutes of promotion via the play-offs in 2018-19, his only season in the Championship.

Since then he has had two spells in charge of Chelsea, either side of a year at Everton, when he helped them stave off relegation.
