Luka Modric's deal with Real Madrid is set to expire on June 30 but he insists on staying put

‘I won’t do like Mbappe’: Luka Modric takes sly shot at Paris Saint-Germain striker for going back on his word and rejecting Real Madrid, as Croatian insists he will extend his stay at the Bernabeu until 2023 after the Champions League final

  • Modric has insisted he will remain at Real Madrid despite his expiring deal
  • He took a stab at Mbappe for changing his mind on joining the Spanish giants
  • The Croatian’s contract expires on June 30 but Madrid fans shouldn’t panic
  • He will play next against Liverpool in the Champions League final on Saturday

Luka Modric took aim at PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe whilst speaking about his future at Real Madrid, stating that he ‘won’t do like Mbappe’ by going back on his word.

Mbappe stunned the Spanish giants on Saturday by agreeing a new three-year deal at PSG reportedly worth £1million per week, despite initially pushing to join Madrid earlier this year.

Modric, 36, is due to become a free agent this summer after a decade in the Spanish capital but insisted he will stay at the Bernabeu, ruling out any possibility of an Mbappe-style U-turn.

‘I’ve not extended my contract with Real Madrid yet, but I won’t do like Mbappe,’ the Croatian joked. ‘And I hope the club won’t do that to me!’

‘We have a good relationship. I have said many times that I want to finish my career here.’

Real Madrid were reportedly prepared to match the deal offered by PSG in a bid to lure the French star away from his hometown.

But Mbappe ultimately decided to commit to another three years in Paris and instantly followed it up with a hat-trick against Metz on Saturday.

Following Mbappe’s last-minute switch to remain in the French capital, La Liga has since filed a complaint to UEFA, claiming PSG ‘threaten the economic sustainability of European football’.

Whilst speaking to COPE, Modric made no secret about his allegiance to Real Madrid and joked about Mbappe’s unexpected U-turn as a means of reassuring the Blancos supporters.

When asked whether Mbappe’s announcement to stay at PSG came as a shock, Modric responded: ‘No, because we didn’t know anything. We had no expectations.

‘There was a lot of talk about this, for a year, but we didn’t know anything; if it was going to happen or not, and that is why we have to close that topic and not talk about it anymore.’

One reason the veteran could be delaying contract negotiations is to avoid any unnecessary distraction ahead of Real Madrid’s crucial Champions League final against Liverpool on Saturday.

The Croatian played a key role in the final against Liverpool four years ago, helping Real Madrid triumph 3-1 in Kyiv.
