Jamie Carragher believes that Tottenham fans were ‘extremely harsh’ to boo Antonio Conte’s team off in recent games.

Tottenham have struggled of late, suffering defeats to Manchester United and Newcastle before missing out on a win against Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League due to late VAR controversy, with the game ending 1-1.

During the Newcastle game in particular many Tottenham fans expressed their frustration with the team, which Carragher feels was an unfair reaction.

Carragher believes that Conte deserves a lot of credit for the work he did last season, when he managed to guide them to Champions League qualification despite the club’s difficult start to the season under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Tottenham are top of their Champions League group going into the final matchday, where they will face Marseille away.

Carragher feels that Conte still deserves support even if Tottenham are knocked out of the competition.

Carragher wrote in The Telegraph: ‘Personally, I think the reaction during the Newcastle game was extremely harsh. I am a huge admirer of the Italian and believe the longer he sticks around, the stronger Spurs will be.

‘Look at where Tottenham were when Conte arrived. They had lost five of their previous seven games under Nuno Espirito Santo. To recover and finish in the top four was a brilliant achievement.

‘Even if it goes wrong on a tricky night in Marseilles next week I do not believe there should be an overreaction.’

Carragher added that if there is to be criticism of Tottenham then it should be directed at the club’s chairman Daniel Levy.

According to Carragher, if Conte doesn’t fit Tottenham’s style then Levy is to blame for appointing a coach who is renowned for being defensively minded.

Carragher wrote: ‘Should the argument persist that the Italian is “not the right fit” for Spurs, the problem is not Conte’s. There is no point in jeering a manager for doing what he has always done. Those who do not like it should direct their frustration at those who appointed him. Daniel Levy knew what he was getting: a proven winner with a reputation for being combustible when he does not get his way.’

After three games without a win, Tottenham will be eager for victory when they face Bournemouth away in the Premier League on Saturday.

Following the Marseille game they then host Liverpool.
