Kasper Schmeichel has left Leicester City - joining Ligue 1 outfit Nice on a three-year contract

Kasper Schmeichel leaves Leicester City for Nice after penning a three-year contract at the Ligue 1 side – seeing Foxes legend end a fairytale 11-year spell at the King Power Stadium

  • Kasper Schmeichel’s 11 years of service at Leicester City has come to an end
  • Schmeichel won the 2015-16 Premier League title and 2020-21 FA Cup with them
  • The Dane’s departure leaves Danny Ward as the club’s No 1 goalkeeper currently

Kasper Schmeichel has completed his move to French club Nice after agreeing a three-year deal to bring an end to his 11-year stint at Leicester.

The Denmark goalkeeper joined the Foxes for just £1.5million in 2011 and made history for Leicester, helping them win the title in 2016 and captaining the club to FA Cup glory last year.

Schmeichel’s departure leaves Danny Ward as the club’s No 1, though they are expected to seek back-up for the Wales international before the transfer window closes.

The writing was on the wall for Schmeichel when he was dropped by Brendan Rodgers for the 5-1 win at Leicester last May. He was then left out of the club’s pre-season training camp in France, though Leicester insisted this was merely to grant him extra time off after playing in the Nations League in June.

Leicester chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha paid a glowing tribute to Schmeichel. He said: ‘Throughout his time with us and particularly as a captain and vice-captain, Kasper has always been a player willing to stand up and take responsibility, leading the team with distinction.

‘His influence and his leadership on and off the pitch speak volumes about him as a professional, as a football player and as a human being.

‘I know Leicester City supporters share the respect we all have for a player of Kasper’s standing after all his accomplishments as a footballer and captain and will join me in wishing him the very best for the next stage of his career in France with OGC Nice.

‘It’s clear to everyone who has watched him perform that Kasper has given everything to Leicester City every time he has played and the experiences shared between him, the Club and our supporters over the last 11 years mean he will always remain a part of this family.’
