Latvia defender Marcis Oss scored one of the fastest own goals ever after passing the ball into his own net against Liechtenstein on Tuesday after just 14 seconds.

The 32-year-old centre-back was left red-faced after the comical error that came almost immediately after kick off at the Antonis Papadopoulos stadium in Cyprus.

Liechtenstein pressed high as the referee got the game underway and soon found themselves holding a shock lead after less than a minute during the friendly encounter.

Oss initially watched on as his defensive partner headed away a ball directed towards Latvia’s box before making the disastrous gaffe as he tried to pass back to his goalkeeper.

The experienced defender currently plays his club football for Latvian side FK RFS and was making his 26 appearance for the national team during Tuesday’s encounter.

Oss somehow managed to skew his pass into the net rather than across the box where goalkeeper Pavels Steinbors had repositioned himself to get a better angle.

Failing to look up, Oss played a blind pass too close to the goal and watched in horror as the ball dripped over the goal-line and into the back of the net.

His shock effort stunned both sets of players as Liechtenstein wildly celebrated while Latvia players were left contemplating Oss’s moment of madness.

The commentator was utterly astonished as he described the incident, saying: ‘Marcis Oss just playing it back into his own goal.

‘ Pavels Steinbors was expecting it to come across his own goal… and inside 30 seconds Liechtenstein have a rare goal.

‘It would be funny if it almost wasn’t so embarrassing for the defender and goalkeeper, not on the same wave length at all.’
