Liverpool beat Manchester United in the Women’s Super League for the first time as Taylor Hinds secured a comeback victory for the Reds.

Just before the men’s teams slogged it out at Anfield, the women’s teams went head to head at Leigh Sports Village. And it proved to be a damaging day for the title hopes of Marc Skinner’s side, who now sit seven points off the top.

United started well enough when Ella Toone opened the scoring in the third minute, firing home a pass from Leah Galton, who had just hit the post.

After Melvine Malard missed a sitter that would have doubled United’s lead, Millie Turner’s own goal just after the half-hour levelled matters as she inadvertently flicked in Melissa Lawley’s cross.

Hinds then beat goalkeeper – and Sports Personality of the Year favourite – Mary Earps from point-blank range at a corner in the 68th minute to seal victory.

‘It was a tough start for us,’ said Liverpool boss Matt Beard, whose side are now fifth, behind United only on goal difference. ‘The way we recovered and the way we grew into the game, we were worthy of the three points.

‘It’s great to keep in touch with that top four or top five – so it was an important win.

‘I know on our day we can compete and I think we’ve proven that a few times already this season. It’s great to have targets. We are an ambitious football club but we take it game by game.’

United manager Skinner admitted: ‘They took their moments and we didn’t. We had chances to win the game at the end and we didn’t take them. I’m frustrated by that performance and that we didn’t do enough.’

Liverpool’s Gemma Bonner suffered a head injury and was bleeding as she left the pitch. Beard confirmed she was expected to go to hospital.

‘I just went in to see her. She’s OK, she’s talking,’ he added. ‘She’s getting her lip stitched but she doesn’t remember the incident.’
