Liverpool fans have questioned the club’s apparent willingness to let Andy Robertson join Tottenham this month.
Arne Slot’s side have received an approach from Spurs about getting a deal done this window, after Thomas Frank lost Ben Davies to a broken ankle for the rest of the season.
Given the 31-year-old’s contract situation, his stated desire to resolve his future and Liverpool’s appreciation for the service he has given them, they have entered into preliminary discussions.
The club underline that these discussions are preliminary and no outcome has yet been reached but they are discussing a fee for him to move this month. Tottenham’s initial plan was to move for him this summer once he becomes a free agent.
Talks are understood to be progressing at pace, however, and, if a deal was completed, it would see the Reds’ lose one of their longest-serving players, with Robertson having joined in 2017.
Reds supporters taken to social media to voice their displeasure over the deal, with some questioning why they would say goodbye to an experienced player half-way through the season without the need to.
Liverpool fans have been left baffled by the club’s decision to seemingly let Andy Robertson leave the club this month
Fans branded the decision ‘a joke’ and ‘silly’ with talks between the clubs progressing
One fan posted on X: ‘Letting Robertson leave now is absolute madness by the club, another baffling decision in a baffling season so far.’
Another wrote: ‘It’s a joke if the club allow another important senior player leave the club so easily.
‘Andy Robertson deserves more. Legend!’
A third added: ‘Unless Spurs are paying a good amount for Robertson it seems silly to let him go at the moment.’
If Robertson is to leave this month, it’s likely that Liverpool will recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan at AS Roma in Italy as cover for Milos Kerkez, who would be the only senior left back left at the club.
Tsimikas has been in Serie A since the start of the season, playing 16 times in all competitions. He has played 115 times for Liverpool since joining in 2020, but was deemed surplus to requirements in the summer.
And his potential return hasn’t gone down well with Reds supporters, who feel the Greece international isn’t up to the standard required in terms of an understudy for Kerkez.
One supporter posted: ‘You just know we’re going to sanction Robertson’s move to Spurs, recall Tsimikas from Roma and all in all, we’ll leave the transfer window with a weaker squad than when we started it. Brilliant.’
Robertson leaving Liverpool will likely mean that Kostas Tsimikas will return from his loan deal at Roma
The reaction from fans has been largely negative, however, with Tsimikas deemed not good enough in the summer
Another wrote: ‘Selling your vice captain mid season would be a disgrace of a decision. Especially when the only thing they’d do is bring Tsimikas back who should not ever be putting on a Liverpool shirt again.’
Not everyone, though, saw the bad side of things. One wrote on X: ‘Andy Robertson deserves to play regular football.’
Another posted: ‘If Andy Robertson leaves, we’re losing a really valuable player. I hope he does whatever is best for him – he deserves minutes and more respect than he’s been getting this season. My skipper.’
Spurs have just completed the singing of Souza, a 19-year-old left back from Santos in Brazil, who will be eligible to play at Burnley on Saturday if his international clearance and work permit comes through in time. But there is no guarantee he can step seamlessly into Premier League football.
Club CEO Vinai Venkatesham has spoken about the need for more leadership and quality in their recruitment and is keen to support Frank as he changes the club culture.
