Liverpool’s catastrophic form went from bad to worse on Wednesday night as Arne Slot’s side suffered a thumping 4-1 defeat at the hands on PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday night.
Days after being rocked 3-0 by Nottingham Forest, the Reds recorded a ninth defeat from 12 games and a third loss in a row to pile pressure on Slot and slip to 12th place in the Champions League table.
Daily Mail Sport‘s LEWIS STEELE was at Anfield on the night to assess the players’ performances on what was another night to forget for Liverpool fans.
LIVERPOOL (4-2-3-1)
Giorgi Mamardashvili – 5.5
Could do little about PSV’s goals. The biggest problem he has is that he is not Alisson. The Brazil No 1 was ill for this match.
Liverpool suffered another disappointing defeat on Wednesday, losing 4-1 to PSV Eindhoven
The Reds conceded an early penalty after a poor handball error from captain Virgil van Dijk
Pressure continues to mount on Arne Slot, whose side have lost nine games from the last 12
Curtis Jones – 5
Played at right back and got on the ball well but produced a heart-in-mouth moment when he passed straight to PSV attacker Saibiri in the penalty area and was lucky to be bailed out.
Ibrahima Konate – 3.5
Needs to be dropped. Has had a load of stick this season, some fair and some nasty. Slightly better in the first half but was at fault for PSV’s third.
Virgil van Dijk – 3 (Booked)
Gave away a silly penalty with a handball – what on earth was he complaining about? – and then was booked for a rash challenge. The best defender in the world but not playing like it.
Milos Kerkez – 4
Puts his body on the line and gets forward well, which will please Slot. But can’t escape the feeling that Robertson should be the No 1 left back right now.
Ryan Gravenberch – 4.5
Played well in the first half, with some fine passes through the lines. He has a better vision than most. But off the ball, again, Gravenberch struggled.
Alexis Mac Allister – 4.5
Similar to the above. Some nice moments on the ball but was left chasing shadows off it in the second half.
Curtis Jones filled in at right back and got on the ball well despite a few worrying hiccups
Liverpool’s player of the season Dominik Szoboszlai (left) scored to equalise in the first half
Mohamed Salah – 4
The great man looked superhuman at times last season… we were saying give him a blank cheque and let him write his numbers on it. Now he looks what he is: 34 years old. Sad to see. Ineffective again.
Dominik Szoboszlai – 6
Liverpool’s player of the season scored to equalise in the first half and put in a shift but was let down by his colleagues.
Cody Gakpo – 4.5
So wasteful. Did not haunt his former club at all.
Hugo Ekitike – 6
Unlucky not to win a penalty in the first half and made some positive moments, looking the most dangerous of any Liverpool player. Came off injured on 61 minutes, which is a big worry.
Substitutes
Alexander Isak (for Ekitike, 61) – 3
Federico Chiesa (for Konate, 76)
Not used: Freddie Woodman, Kornel Misciur, Joe Gomez, Wataru Endo, Andy Robertson, Trey Nyoni, Rio Ngumoha.
Mohamed Salah looks older by the game and continued to be ineffective in attack for Liverpool
Cody Gakpo was extremely wasteful and failed to set Anfield alight against his former club
Manager
Arne Slot – 3
His team are a mess and he does not seem to have the answers.
