Nottingham Forest are set to make an opening bid for Manchester City forward James McAtee

Nottingham Forest are primed to make an opening bid for Manchester City forward James McAtee as Morgan Gibbs-White heads to Tottenham.

Forest have also lodged a bid for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa but well below his valuation.

Forest have already checked on McAtee’s availability and are due to offer around £25m.

Borusisa Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt also remain in the race for the midfielder.

McAtee joined City’s academy in 2013 and made his senior debut in 2021.

He spent two years on loan at Sheffield United and has made 18 Premier League appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side, netting three times.

The 22-year-old, who captained England Under-21s to a second successive European Championship last month, can play at No 10 or as a wide forward.

He has just one year remaining on his contract at the Etihad.

A move appears increasingly likely as Guardiola looks to cut down his squad size, while City have already signed Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Ait-Nouri this summer.

Mail Sport reported in December how a raft of clubs have been showing interest in England and Italy but the strongest interest has been from Germany and the Bundesliga still seems a likely destination.

Fiorentina, Roma and Atalanta are among his admirers in Serie A and other Premier League sides have enquired but Dortmund, Frankfurt and Forest have maintained contact from the start since it became apparent Guardiola would consider allowing McAtee to leave.

McAtee has made 48 Premier League appearances altogether and six in the Champions League. He got two assists and a goal to help inspire England U21s to their Euros triumph last month.

Meanwhile, Forest have had a bid for key Brentford striker Yoane Wissa rebuffed as they revive their interest in the Congolese international.

Forest targeted Wissa in January and were willing to pay £25million for the 28-year-old in the winter transfer window.

But the Bees were unwilling to sell Wissa, who they value at more than £50m.

Wissa netted an impressive 19 Premier League goals last campaign and remains a target for Nuno Espirito Santo.

However, Forest’s latest offer fell way short of Brentford’s expectation and was even lower than their January bid.
