Man United's Harry Maguire will reportedly not travel to Greece for his retrial next month

Harry Maguire ‘will not travel to Greece for a retrial’ over a quashed conviction for assaulting a police officer in Mykanos in August 2020… with the Manchester United defender ‘testifying via video link’

  • Harry Maguire’s appeal hearing in Greece will get underway next month
  • The Manchester United captain faces a retrial over a quashed conviction
  • There is apparently no requirement for Maguire to attend the hearing in person

Harry Maguire will reportedly remain in the UK while his retrial following a quashed conviction for assaulting a police officer in Greece prepares to get underway.

The Manchester United captain and England defender was previously handed a 21-month suspended sentence after being arrested while holidaying in Mykonos in 2020.

Maguire was involved in a brawl while away on the Greek island with his family and at the time claiming that he thought he was being ‘kidnapped’ while being arrested.

He spent two nights in a cell before being released. A subsequent court hearing followed where Maguire received his punishment. His appeal means he does not have a criminal record under legal rules in Greece.

The 30-year-old is hoping to clear his name and is preparing to appear in court via a video link, according to the Mirror.

The trial will take place in June on the picturesque neighbouring island of Syros.

However, there is reportedly no requirement for him to attend in person.

Maguire claimed that he was protecting his sister Daisy after she had supposedly been approached by two men and injected with an unknown substance and began to pass in and out of consciousness.

He insists he is innocent of committing any crime and claims police beat him upon being arrested.

The Man United skipper further stated he was hit in the legs and told his playing career was over.

The England international was previously found guilty of assaulting a police officer during an incident that took place outside of a bar.

Maguire recounted the ordeal to the BBC upon returning from Greece three years ago, stating: ‘It was horrible – it’s nothing I ever want to do again.

‘I don’t wish it on anybody. Its the first time I’ve ever been inside a prison.

‘I have great faith in Greek law that the retrial will give us more time to prepare, gather evidence and allow witnesses into the court. I’m really confident the truth will be told and come out.’

Meanwhile, Maguire looks set for a summer exit from Old Trafford after struggling to secure a place in Erik ten Hag’s starting side.

He has been a consistent benchwarmer throughout large parts of the season, making just 15 Premier League appearances and starting only seven of those matches.

The world’s most expensive defender could finish the season with two pieces of silverware.

Ten Hag’s United prepare to take on Manchester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday, June 3 after having already won the Carabao Cup.
