Marc Guehi has spoken out on his failed move to Liverpool, but kept his cards close to his chest

Marc Guehi has spoken out on his failed deadline day move to Liverpool on the back of England’s 5-0 thumping of Serbia on Tuesday night.

The Crystal Palace defender played 90 minutes in a comfortable victory for Thomas Tuchel’s men, keeping another clean sheet and scoring his first goal for his country in the second half.

It was the latest episode in what has been a crazy few days for the centre back, who wanted to leave Palace to join Liverpool, but for his current club to pull the plug on the move at the 11th hour.

Palace had seemingly assumed they were set to sign a replacement in the final hours of the transfer window, with Brazil defender Igor Julio lined up for a season-long loan switch from rivals Brighton.

When that was communicated to Liverpool, the process of completing the move began, but Arne Slot’s side still had to wait for the green light from Palace, who wanted a left-sided centre back literally through the door before giving that. That never happened, and the move was cancelled.

Guehi was asked about the events in his post-match interview with ITV following England’s win, but was keeping his cards close to his chest.

When asked how the last eight days had been for him on the back of his failed move, he smiled and said: ‘It’s been great.’

The 25-year-old was then asked about how it was joining up with England immediately after, and responded:

‘It’s always easy coming here, we’ve got such a good group of players, good group of staff. We’re working towards one goal, so it’s really enjoyable and always good to be here.’

Guehi has been in and out of the England team under Thomas Tuchel as the German juggles his options as he tries to win the World Cup next year, but many have suggested he should be first-choice in the back line.

He partnered Ezri Konsa – who also scored his first England goal – on Tuesday, in a duo that could now be seen regularly in the run-up to the tournament in North America next summer.

Tuchel, meanwhile, was full of praise for his player on the back of another successful camp overall.

‘It’s the example, it’s the example of how the boys were in the camp,’ Tuchel said. ‘Exactly like this, they put their personal interests aside and he was the best team-mate possible.

‘A fantastic performance, he was very strong for Crystal Palace and he showed it today on the pitch.’
