Marcus Rashford insisted it's 'nonsense' to claim Man United gave up in their loss to Liverpool

‘It’s nonsense!’: Marcus Rashford blasts back at claims Manchester United GAVE UP during their 7-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday… but admits players ‘were talking but not in agreement of what to do’

Marcus Rashford has insisted it is ‘nonsense’ to suggest Manchester United gave up during the second half of their 7-0 defeat to Liverpool.

Erik ten Hag’s side were thrashed by their arch-rivals at Anfield on Sunday after conceding six second half goals.

This led to significant criticism from fans and pundits alike that United completely folded in the second half, something the England forward hit back at.

He said: ‘We didn’t give up, that’s nonsense. Organisation was bad, yes, that’s why we conceded the goals.

‘I believe everybody was trying to get back into the game that much we came away from the team’s principles in and out of possession.

‘Our attack wasn’t connected with the midfield and the same with the midfield and defence.

‘We tried to get a grip then it was 2-0, 3-0. We were talking but not in agreement of what to do.

‘The only thing we can do is learn from it. I’m happy we have another game so quickly.’

Rashford – speaking ahead of his side’s Europa League last-16 clash with Real Betis on Thursday – also defended Bruno Fernandes after the United skipper was heavily criticised for his actions and supposed lack of leadership during the defeat, which even saw him push an assistant referee.

He added: ‘I love playing with Bruno as you can imagine. For a forward like me he is the perfect player to play with.

‘He has been a good leader for us even when he’s not been captain and he has helped other players become good leaders.

‘I don’t have one bad thing to say about Bruno. Nobody is perfect, sometimes you want to win so bad you do things that are a little bit out of character.

‘We support him because he is a fantastic player. We wouldn’t be in this position without him.’

During the humbling for Erik ten Hag’s side at Anfield, they were torn apart by Liverpool in one of the Premier League’s most remarkable results of all-time after Cody Gakpo had put the Reds one-up at half-time.

Gakpo, Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez all scored twice before Roberto Firmino added a seventh late-on, as United’s organisation and structure seemed to disappear.

Gary Neville – a huge advocate of Ten Hag’s management – was one of several former United players to tear into the team after the match.

He had said: ‘He’s dealt with set backs Erik ten Hag, this is a big one. They’ve gone to pieces in this second half.

‘They’ve lost their shape, they’ve lost their discipline, they’ve lost their heads. I never had them down as title winners, I think it’s a miracle Ten Hag has got them where he has. This is out of character for this team.

‘This is really bad today, its a sore one but, I think it is a bad one,’ he added.
