Eddie Howe has provided a key update on Alexander Isak’s fitness after the Swedish striker limped out of Newcastle’s FA Cup defeat by Brighton last weekend.

The Magpies are due to face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley next weekend, and have already been handed a triple blow ahead of that game.

Anthony Gordon is suspended for the showpiece event after being sent off against Brighton, while Lewis Hall and Sven Botman will miss out through injury.

Isak also appeared to emerge as a doubt to play at Wembley after he needed medical treatment and hobbled off in the latter stages of normal time on Sunday.

But Howe has allayed any fears that Isak has a serious issue, revealing that Newcastle’s talisman has been in full training this week.

‘He’s fine,’ Howe said at his press conference on Friday morning. ‘He came off (on Sunday) feeling fatigued, a tightness in his body. But he’s trained every day this week.’

Isak being available to play will be a huge relief to Newcastle fans given the striker’s brilliant form this season.

He has scored 22 goals in 31 appearances across all competitions and was badly missed when he sat out Newcastle’s 2-0 defeat by Liverpool in the Premier League last week.

The Magpies will hope that he can cause Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate problems at Wembley next weekend as they bid to spring an upset.

Isak and Co have one more game to get through – a trip to West Ham on Monday – before they can turn their attention to trying to take down Arne Slot’s Reds.
