Newcastle United remain in talks over a £24m fee with Reims for goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen.
As Daily Mail Sport previously reported, the 20-year-old had visited Newcastle’s training ground and would join as competition for Nick Pope as No 1, with Aaron Ramsdale expected to return to Southampton.
A deal is still to be finalised but negotiations are ongoing for the former France youth international.
Jaouen, who was also on Real Madrid’s list, had 15 clean sheets in 34 league games last season. He conceded just 35 goals in 34 games and made 71 saves in total.
If all goes to plan, he hopes to have a medical early next week.
Newcastle’s Nick Pope is understood to be on Leeds United’s radar as they assess options.

Their keeper Karl Darlow is out of contract and of interest to Tottenham, who have announced the signing of Andy Robertson.
The 32-year-old left-back joins on a free after leaving Liverpool this summer.
Spurs are also set to return with a second bid for Brighton centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke, who the Seagulls value at £70million.
