Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon is set for a two week spell on the sidelines after suffering an ankle injury… as £40m January signing misses out on the Magpies’ 2-1 win over Wolves

  • Gordon is now facing two to three weeks on the sidelines with an ankle injury

Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon will be out of action for at least two weeks after recently suffering an ankle injury.

The 22-year-old missed out on the Magpies’ 2-1 win over Wolves on Sunday afternoon, as Eddie Howe’s side maintained their push for a top four spot.

But, despite the win, it wasn’t all good news for Newcastle fans as their £40million January signing was ruled out for the clash and could now be facing some time on the sidelines.

Sportsmail understands that the English winger will be out of action for two to three weeks as he recovers from an ankle injury.

Gordon’s last appearance came in his side’s 2-0 defeat to Man City at the start of the month, where he made his full debut for Eddie Howe’s high-flying Magpies.

He was substituted after 62 minutes of the match, having failed to make an impact in the Etihad clash.

The speed bursting winger has managed just four appearances for Eddie Howe’s Magpies and has so far failed to score for his new club.

Gordon has been undergoing a personal fitness programme since joining Newcastle, to make sure he is up to the levels that Howe’s demands require.

The 22-year-old sparked controversy after forcing an exit from his boyhood club Everton in January, despite the Toffees remaining in a relegation battle.

Gordon came up through the Everton youth ranks at the club’s Finch Farm training base before making his first-team debut in 2020 and quickly emerging as a bright prospect for the future.

However, the 22-year-old began to sever his relationship with the club’s supporters after first refusing to turn up to training before eventually securing a £40m move to St James’ Park that put an end to his Goodison Park career.

The winger has since revealed that, despite his Everton tenure coming to an unsavoury end, the Merseyside outfit will always have a place in his ‘heart’.

‘My whole life has been at Everton. I grew up in Everton, I wasn’t going out with friends and stuff when I was younger, I was always in Everton so it was a massive place in my heart and in my life which I’ll never forget,’ Gordon told Sky Sports.

Luckily for Eddie Howe and his side, they were able to secure all three points at St James’ Park on Sunday without the help of their January signing.

The hosts took the lead in the first-half of the game as Aleksandr Isak got on end of a Kieran Trippier delivery to head home. Wolves then hit back in the 70th minute as substitute Hwan-Hee Chan brought the visitors level with a well-taken finish.

However, in-form winger Miguel Almiron wrapped up the win for the Magpies in the 79th minute after his deflected strike nestled in the back of the net.

The result leaves Howe’s side fifth in the Premier League table, four points behind fourth-placed Spurs with two games in hand.
