NYCFC captain James Sands had a heated moment with fans after the club’s 3-1 home loss to Cincinnati on Wednesday – which marked the side’s seventh straight game in all competitions without a win.

The result dropped New York City – who won the league in 2021 and were conference finalists last year – to 14th place in the Eastern Conference. And fans let Sands hear it after the game.

‘It’s not good enough, James!’ one called out in a clip capturing the moment.

‘We’re here through thick and thin, bro,’ another said. ‘We’re never gonna leave, bro. But this, what you guys are doing, it’s not enough. If it’s the coach, speak up. Do something about it, bro. We’re sick and tired of this.’

The 22-year-old, who returned from a loan spell with Rangers earlier this year, listened to the fans before responding.

‘You don’t think we come in here every day and f***ing work?,’ he said.

‘We don’t feel it, bro. We don’t see that effort, James,’ one fan shot back.

‘I will tell you something right now, everyone who’s on that field hurts more than you do,’ Sands then responded. ‘It’s a fact, okay. You think anyone is happy with that?’

One of the fans then reiterated the scale of NYCFC’s current winless streak – seven games – with the defensive midfielder reminding him that last season and the one before featured tough spells as well.

NYCFC had a five-game winless streak last year in the league, and went six games without a win in 2021 before hoisting MLS Cup that postseason.

Sands and the fan came to a sort of truce eventually, as he told the fan he appreciated him coming to the game, and the supporter said, ‘I don’t have anything against you bro. But I want you guys to understand that we’re not here just for the fun of it.’

However, the conversation ended on a tense note.

‘Don’t say we don’t care okay? Cause that’s f***ing disrespectful,’ Sands said before walking away.’

NYCFC’s next game is against the New England Revolution on Saturday.
