Fernandes’s 18th-minute wonder goal came seven minutes after he provided the assist for Alejandro Garnacho’s opener in Turkey.

United came into the game needing to avoid defeat in order to keep their Champions League hopes alive following three losses in their previous four games.

In a thrilling tie, the hosts managed to grab one back through former Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech.

Galatasaray thought they had equalised before the break when Mauro Icardi, who scored the winner at Old Trafford, finished smartly past Andre Onana.

But the officials flag spared Erik ten Hag’s side, who went in with a 2-1 advantage at the interval.
