‘In a safe in a box!”: Patrick Vieira admits that he keeps his 1998 World Cup winners’ medal locked away at the bank… as the Palace boss claims winning in front of his home fans was ‘one of the best moments in my life’

Patrick Vieira revealed that he keeps his World Cup winners’ medal locked away in a bank, to avoid losing his prize possession while he is constantly on the move in the world of management.

The Crystal Palace manager was a guest on Sky’s Soccer AM, when he admitted that he does not keep his medal on his person.

The rangy defensive midfielder was part of France’s World Cup winning side that lifted the famous trophy in 1998, after a Zinedine Zidane inspired side demolished Brazil 3-0.

‘It’s in a safe – in a safe in a box,’ admitted Vieira. ‘because we are moving around, you know from Manchester and then to New York.

‘When you’re moving around you don’t want to lose it, so the safest place to have it is in the bank.’

The Arsenal legend’s side in 1998 were one of only six sides to have won the tournament in front of their own supporters – and no team has yet managed it since.

‘It made it really special,’ he added. ‘I think winning the World Cup – it’s of course a kid’s dream. And for us, it was really special because it was in France.

‘It was in our own souls. It was in front of our own fans. So winning the World Cup in France was something that I don’t know if it will happen again, you know, for French players.

‘It was and still is one of the best moments in my life.’
