An investor group partnered with New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft has purchased a $240 million stake in the company that owns Mexican soccer powerhouse Club América and its 88,000-seat home, Estadio Azteca.

The stadium will host five World Cup matches in this summer’s highly anticipated international tournament, including the opening match of the event.

Club America had been owned by the Ollamani Group, which was set up by its parent company, Televisa, a Mexican telecommunications and broadcasting company. The new partnership will be known as Grupo Aguilas, an enterprise valued at $490 million, according to the companies.

The incoming investors include General Atlantic. The Kraft Analytics Group, a subsidiary of the billionaire Patriots owner’s holding company, to offer ‘industry-leading customer data platform alongside proprietary fan experience and strategic consulting expertise,’ according to a press release. 

Televisa Chairman Emilio Azcarraga Jean will serve as Grupo Aguilas’ executive president. 

‘This strategic alliance positions us strongly for our next stage of leadership as we expand our reach and deliver even more unforgettable experiences for fans in Mexico and beyond,’ Azcarraga Jean said in a statement.

The 84-year-old Kraft’s holding company controls the NFL’s Patriots and the MLS’ New England Revolution, both of which play at another 2026 World Cup Venue, Foxboro’s Gilette Stadium.

As reported by Bloomberg, Mexican soccer teams are a hot investment at the moment. In 2021, Hollywood actress Eva Longoria led a group of American investors in buying half of Club Necaxa. And this year, Club Queretaro was bought for $120 million by an Atlanta-based fir, Innovatio Capital.

But no team in Liga MX has the mystique of Club América, which has claimed a record 16 league titles as well as 7 CONCACAF Champions League crowns.

Among the team’s most celebrated heroes are legendary forward Cuauhtémoc Blanco, who has since entered politics, and goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, who enjoyed two separate stints in Mexico City.
