Paul Pogba wanted Manchester United to realise they'd made a mistake in not offering an improved contract sooner as a new documentary exposes his fractured relationship with them

Paul Pogba wanted Manchester United to realise they’d made a ‘mistake’ in not offering him a lucrative new contract sooner as a new documentary exposes the midfielder’s broken relationship with the Old Trafford club.

The France international is set to return to Juventus after his United contract ran down and it has emerged he dismissed an offer of a £300,000-a-week deal as ‘nothing’.

His comments, made during a conversation with his agent, the late Mino Raiola, have emerged in a new Amazon documentary on the player.

Pogba first approached United about the possibility of an extended contract in the summer of 2019 but it took the club some time to table their offer.

It emerged in a preview for The Pogmentary that the player rejected two offers in excess of his existing £290,000-a-week at United and wanted to punish the club for leaving him waiting.

Speaking to Raiola as he drives a Rolls-Royce in Miami, Pogba asks: ‘Did Manchester make a second offer?’

‘Yes,’ replies Raiola, who died in April. ‘They absolutely want you to stay. For me, the offer doesn’t reflect that. I told them, “If you want him to stay, don’t make that offer”.

‘I will make them understand that if they really want you to stay and they want to build a project around you, this time they have to act differently and put the money on the table.’

Pogba responds: ‘They’re bluffing. How can you tell a player you absolutely want him and offer him nothing? Never seen that.

‘Playing is all that matters, winning too. My thought process is to show Manchester they shouldn’t have waited this long to offer a contract and to show other clubs that Manchester made a mistake in not offering a contract.’

In another part of the new documentary series, Raiola speaks about the contrast between the Pogba that under-performed for United and the player who won the World Cup with France in 2018.

The agent says: ‘You’re different with the national team. You’re another Pogba with the national team and with Manchester. It’s not normal.

‘The French team gets the real Pogba – the Pogba from Juventus, the Pogba we all love.

‘With Manchester there’s something blocking you. I think it’s very stressful.’

And in a clip of Pogba from last summer, he talks about how United made him feel unimportant when compared to his standing within the France set-up.

He says: ‘Players have to feel important in their clubs. And they have to feel important in their teams. If you don’t have that, it’s over.

‘I came back from injury, they didn’t help me, they didn’t care how I was feeling.

‘So I had to go to the national team to get my confidence back.’

Pogba will return to Juventus for a second spell after six seasons at Old Trafford

Pogba will return to Juventus for a second spell after six seasons at Old Trafford

After six underwhelming years during a second spell with United, Pogba will return to Juventus, the club where he enjoyed considerable success between 2012 and 2016.

Those performances persuaded United to break the world transfer record to sign him for £89m and Pogba helped Jose Mourinho’s side win the EFL Cup and the UEFA Europa League – the club’s last silverware – in his debut season.

But despite playing 226 matches and scoring 39 goals during six seasons at United, Pogba failed to show his best form on a consistent basis in their midfield.

Sportsmail revealed Pogba cost the club nearly £1m per game during his six years back at Old Trafford and will pocket a £3.78m loyalty bonus when he officially leaves on June 30.

It led to Old Trafford legend Gary Neville saying the manner of Pogba’s departure ‘left a bad taste in the mouth’.

He said in a TikTok chat: ‘I’m not bothered about Pogba’s comments to be honest with you. I think that once a player has left, he can say whatever he wants. Fine, no problem.

‘But I don’t think he has performed well over the last six years. I don’t think the club have performed well with him either, or handled him well.

‘It’s been a partnership that, to be fair, has failed on both sides so that is what you’d have to say on that one.

‘There is no winner when a player leaves after six years with the money that has been spent and very little has been won.

‘The player leaves dissatisfied and the club are dissatisfied with it as well. It leaves a bad taste in the mouth because it’s the second time it’s happened.

‘You wish him all the best in the future at Juventus.’
