Qarabag have been fined £4,379 by UEFA following racist abuse from a fan in a Youth League game against Chelsea

Qarabag have been fined £4,379 by UEFA after a supporter was found to have racially abused a Chelsea player during a Youth League match last month in Azerbaijan.

Chelsea’s Under 19 side won the match 5-0 at the Azersun Arena on November 5, but play had been paused after Sol Gordon opened the scoring in the second half.

The Blues issued a statement post-match, which said an individual in the crowd had subjected their players to racist abuse.

‘We are proud of the way our players and staff responded to the incident on the pitch, swiftly reporting it to the referee, and commend those for dealing with the matter professionally and appropriately in line with UEFA protocols,’ Chelsea said in their statement post-match.

‘Chelsea Football Club is immensely proud of the diversity within our team and across our entire club and will continue to work with UEFA to ensure that those responsible for discriminatory behaviour in football are held accountable.’

Qarabag apologised for the incident and insisted it does not represent their values. The club added it would conduct their own investigation.
