Ryan Jack fired Rangers into the lead early on in extra time with a stunning strike

Rangers ensured there was no hangover from their Europa League final defeat as they toasted Scottish Cup glory at Hampden.

Having lost on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt in the sweltering heat of Seville on Wednesday night, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side ended the season with at least one trophy in the cabinet at the end of an exhausting campaign.

Super subs Ryan Jack and Scott Wright secured Rangers’ first Scottish Cup since 2009 with victory against Hearts after extra-time at Scotland’s national stadium.

The Ibrox club lost the Premiership title to bitter rivals Celtic this season and were left heart-broken in Spain in midweek in the European showpiece.

But their victory yesterday made sure the campaign was not an ultimate failure as they eventually savoured sweet success in Glasgow.

Putting yourself under pressure early in a cup final is never a smart idea – but Peter Haring did just that with a lunge on Rangers left-back Calvin Bassey inside just four minutes. Referee Willie Collum didn’t hesitate to show the Hearts midfielder a yellow card.

Hearts pressed for an early opener and almost grabbed it with 10 minutes on the clock. Ellis Simms won a header which set up Nathaniel Atkinson on the right.

He played Liam Boyce down the right side of the box and his teasing delivery across the face of goal found Simms, but the on-loan Everton striker was stretching to meet it and his effort clipped the outside of the left post. He attacked it with his right foot, when his left would have been a better option to convert.

Rangers had enjoyed greater joy down the right a couple of times and threatened via that route midway through the first half when Scott Arfield was set up by Steven Davis in the box but his effort was not strong enough and straight at Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon.

The veteran No 1 then had to be alert when team-mate Craig Halkett’s back pass was high and tricky, with Gordon having to use his head to control the ball.

With half-time looming, Bassey – who impressed in Seville on Wednesday night – delivered a cross from the left. Joe Aribo got his head to it but was stretching and couldn’t divert it on target.

Bassey was at it again three minutes before the interval when he swung in a brilliant cross which met on-loan Manchester United attacker Amad Diallo, but he headed wastefully over the bar.

Rangers emerged after the break with more intent than their rivals and nearly struck first just before the hour mark. Diallo’s ball over the top from deep set Ryan Kent through but Gordon made himself big to block his effort.

Bassey was looking a real threat and, with 15 minutes remaining, he found himself jinking past maroon shirts. When a shooting chance arrived, his effort with his weaker right foot was pushed wide by Gordon, who then dived on the loose ball.

Leon Balogun, back in defence for Rangers, had a glorious chance to make it 1-0 in the final ten minutes when he met captain James Tavernier’s corner but headed inches over the bar.

It wouldn’t be a game involving Hearts without a big save from Gordon – and he pulled off another in stoppage time.

Aribo looked set to win the cup for Rangers when, despite a tug from Atkinson, he fired an effort that seemed goalbound but Gordon somehow got a foot to the ball to direct it behind.

Rangers substitute Wright then saw a header clip the bar having met Tavernier’s free-kick before extra-time was confirmed.

Within two minutes of the restart Bassey crossed to Aribo, who headed over the bar as another chance was wasted.

But Van Bronckhorst’s men finally made the breakthrough in the 94th minute. Tavernier’s corner was headed clear by Halkett but only as far as Jack.

The midfielder took one touch before unleashing an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box that flew in via the underside of the bar.

In the blink of an eye, it was 2-0 and game over. Kent broke forward and slipped in Wright, who drilled a low effort into the bottom-left corner.

Hearts had been non-existent as an attacking threat for a while even before Rangers struck.

Sub Fashion Sakala nearly made it 3-0 at the start of the second period of extra time but Gordon held his shot before he also denied Kent and Glen Kamara.

By that point, the party was underway as Rangers secured cup glory.
