Real Madrid have confirmed that star striker Karim Benzema has tested positive for Covid-19

Los Blancos released a statement on Friday morning confirming that the French international returned a positive test, after only just joining the squad following his end of season break.

The 33-year-old had been resting up since France‘s shock elimination to Switzerland in the last-16 of Euro 2020 on June 28.

Benzema returned to duty for Madrid at their Valdebebas ground, along with international teammate Raphael Varane, on Thursday.

His positive test means that he will now miss a key part of Madrid’s pre-season preparations ahead of the new campaign.

The team are set to travel to Scotland ahead of their match against Steven Gerrard’s Rangers side on Sunday evening.

Benzema though will be unable to take the flight to face the Scottish Premiership champions and will instead have an extended break from training as he isolates away from the squad.

He will remain in isolation until he can test negative, before he can return to training with his teammates.

Real Madrid are hoping to improve on last season where they finished second to city rivals Atletico in the LaLiga table and were knocked out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage by eventual winners Chelsea.

Benzema is again expected to play a big part after scoring 30 goals in 46 appearances across all competitions last season.
