Former Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos has announced that his debut single will be released this weekend

Former Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos has shocked fans by announcing his debut single.

One of the most decorated players of the modern era, Ramos departed boyhood club Sevilla earlier this year to join Liga MX side Monterrey.

The 39-year-old has enjoyed a productive start to life in Mexico, netting three league goals in 12 appearances for the Rayados as the club currently sit top of the Mexican top flight.

However, his ambitions clearly stretch beyond the football pitch.

On Saturday Ramos announced that he was venturing into the world of music with his debut single Cibeles.

The title is a nod to the Plaza de Cibeles, a square in the Spanish capital where Ramos celebrated many of biggest triumphs with Los Blancos.

The track – available on all streaming platforms from August 31 – is accompanied by a video that sees the former Spain captain signing whilst clutching rosary beads as clips from his career in football flash on the screen.

In the snippet shared on social media, Ramos sings in his native Spanish with what appears to be a reference to his emotional departure from Real Madrid in 2020.

‘There are things I never told you, that still hurt me. I never wanted to leave, you asked me to fly.’ Ramos can be heard signing.

Ramos’ musical debut provoked mixed responses among fans on social media, despite amassing more than 5 million views in under 24 hours.

One wore: ‘You can barely understand you when you speak, and on top of that, you start singing.’

Another agreed: ‘Gosh what is this?’

A third added: ‘You have to know when to stop trying to always be the main character.’

Other fans defended Ramos’ latest venture however,  with one writing: ‘We are ready. Best Latin music.’
