England will play one of their Euro 2028 group games at the Etihad Stadium, Daily Mail Sport can reveal

England’s group match away from Wembley at the 2028 European Championship will be held at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium, Daily Mail Sport can reveal.

The Three Lions will play one of their three group stage matches on the road, and the homes of Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, Aston Villa, City or Newcastle United were in the running.

However, it is understood that the Etihad has been given the nod.

Should England then progress to the round-of-16, they would also play another match away from the national stadium in a move away from the 1966 World Cup and 1996 Euros, when all their games were in the capital.

The tournament will take place in England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland. A full schedule will be announced next week, where City’s home, currently in the midst of a £300m expansion that will take its capacity to 61,747, will be announced as England’s ‘second home’ for the group stage. Both semis and the final will be played at Wembley.

While the four hosts will play qualifying matches, two slots in the 24-nation finals will be reserved for host countries whose teams fail to qualify.

In the event that more than two fail to grab places on merit, UEFA will select the two which performed best in qualifying. Any others would miss out.

City’s expansion adds 7,900 seats to the capacity, and is expected to be completed during the current season.
