Ruud van Nistelrooy has revealed how Leicester should build their team to win promotion next year

Ruud van Nistelrooy believes Leicester should build their promotion campaign around homegrown players next season – regardless of whether he is in charge.

The Dutchman faces crunch talks on his future in the coming days after last Sunday’s 1-0 home defeat by Liverpool ensured the Foxes’ disastrous campaign would end in relegation.

Though Van Nistelrooy is far from certain to lead Leicester in the Championship, he has a clear view of how they should proceed.

One of the few positive aspects of the season has been the emergence of wide attacker Jeremy Monga, who has made two Premier League appearances even though he does not turn 16 until July.

Monga cannot sign professional terms until he is 17 and as Mail Sport reported in February, he is courted by several elite clubs, with Manchester City and Chelsea showing particularly strong interest.

Yet Monga is not the only one. Young forward Jake Evans was given a debut as a late substitute in the 2-2 draw at Brighton on April 12 and has considerable promise.

Luke Thomas and Kasey McAteer would be ideal first-team regulars in a Championship campaign while another academy product, Hamza Choudhury, is currently on loan at Sheffield United but is under contract with Leicester until 2027.

Will Alves and Ben Nelson are completing loan spells with Cardiff and Oxford respectively that should leave them well-equipped to play a leading role for Leicester next term.

Leicester must also resolve the futures of several senior players.

Jamie Vardy is out of contract at the in the summer and a decision on whether he will sign a new one is anticipated before the end of the season.
