A current Premier League player has been spotted in the background of one of the top flight’s most bizarre viral moments.

It was November 2009 and Chelsea – who would go onto win the Premier League that season under Carlo Ancelotti – were taking on Man United in a league game at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues won the game 1-0 thanks to John Terry’s 76th minute winner, but it is remembered for an extremely strange reason.

As the match headed into the dying embers, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson subbed on Michael Owen and Gabriel Obertan for Anderson and Ryan Giggs, while Ancelotti brought on Didier Drogba for Salomon Kalou.

However, as the camera panned to the dugout, eagle-eyed supporters noticed one fan near the front of the stand brushing his teeth while this was all taking place.

During Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Man United, a supporter behind the dugout was seen on camera

It is one of the most bizarre moments in Premier League history but to add even more intrigue, it turns out Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah was sitting just one row behind the teeth-brushing supporter.

Chalobah joined the Blues academy at the age of eight and now 24, he has since gone onto make 63 appearances for the club, although he is yet to appear this season due to injury.

The defender also enjoyed loan spells at Ipswich, Huddersfield and Lorient during his formative years.

He would have been just 10-years-old at the time of the video in which he looks calm, but slightly confused as to what was going on.

In a post on x, formerly Twitter, former Chelsea youngster Milan Lalkovic revealed Chalobah’s identity in the clip as he said: ‘Trev Chalobah and my dad behind the guy (brushing his teeth) is just so funny. My dad just thinks wtf.’

The supporter has gone down in history for his bizarre act and at the time, BBC Radio 5 Live’s phone-in show 606 launched an appeal to find the man following the game.

Someone named Dave came forward, telling host DJ Spoony: ‘I was wanting to get to the game and I put it (the toothbrush) in my pocket and forgot to brush my teeth.

‘I thought no one was looking. I always brush my teeth before I go anywhere. I thought no one was looking at me.’

IT’S ALL KICKING OFF!

It’s All Kicking Off is an exciting new podcast from Mail Sport that promises a different take on Premier League football.

It is available on MailOnline, Mail+, YouTube, Apple Music and Spotify.

He added to the strangeness of the whole situation as he further explained the outfit he was wearing.

He continued: ‘I saw my ex-girlfriend at the game. The reason I was wearing sunglasses was to disguise my face because I like the girls, I like the women.

‘I think I am a ladies man and I’m very good-looking.’

Chalobah – whose brother Nathaniel also came through at the club but now plays for West Brom – has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge this month, although any transfer may be scuppered due to his ongoing injury problems.
