Chris Sutton believes that Steven Gerrard would be welcome back at Rangers once again following Philippe Clement’s sacking.
Speaking on the latest episode of It’s All Kicking Off!, Sutton says he would bring an ‘aura’ and ‘clarity’ back to a Rangers side that have struggled so far this season.
Clement was sacked by Rangers on Sunday following the side’s 2-1 loss to St. Mirren, which left them 13 points behind Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic.
That result marked successive defeats at Ibrox for Rangers – who were alsodumped out of the Scottish Cup by second division side Queen’s Park earlier this month.
Sutton, who made 130 appearances for the Gers’ cross-city rivals Celtic, believes Gerrard could make a return to Ibrox.
Responding to whether he believes Gerrard would be welcomed back by supporters, Sutton said: ‘I think it would be welcome. What Steven Gerrard did have first time round, he had that aura, that presence, that clout to attract some good players to Ibrox

‘[The likes of] Ryan Kent, Connor Galton, Steven Davis, Scott Arfield, players that he, he relied heavily on, he does have that.’
Gerrard managed Rangers for three years from 2018 to 2021, guiding them to the Scottish Premiership title unbeaten in his third season at the club.
But after leaving Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq last month, a return to Rangers is a possibility for the 44-year-old.
Sutton also pointed out that Rangers may have delayed the sacking of Clement due to the board awarding him a new contract at the start of the season.
He continued: ‘The strong rumours for months with Philip Clemont, who Rangers gave a new contract to at the start of the season is the reason [his sacking] seemed to be delayed.
‘The new chief executive Patrick Stewart, who was formerly at Manchester United, said they can’t.keep going through the same managerial process of sacking somebody, I think he said this in December and then appointing another manager
‘But eventually he felt that had gone so far down the road where they couldn’t afford not to sack him.
‘They’ve got there now so they need to look forward and make the right appointment, which I suspect will come in the summer.’
