The world is mocking Manchester United after their shambolic 4-0 defeat to Brentford

Manchester United’s humbling by Brentford has sent shockwaves around the world after their 4-0 defeat saw them suffer back-to-back defeats as pundits, media outlets and fans were left stunned by their woeful display.

Erik ten Hag has only been in the role since June but is already facing huge pressure on his position after he became the first United boss to lose his first two league games since 1921 – though it’s the performances of his players that have been seized upon by the club’s critics.

In a humiliation that saw the Red Devils 4-0 down at half time, pundits such as Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand were all scathing of the players after some high-profile errors – including from keeper David de Gea.

But it wasn’t just in the UK where United were savaged – their miserable outing at Brentford has led to damning verdicts disapproval across the globe, from Australia to Vietnam and Africa too.

Manchester United find themselves bottom of the league for the first time since 1992 after their drubbing at Brentford and face Liverpool next in what should be a worrying sign for Ten Hag.

Vietnam News led the stunned reaction from around the world and summed up United’s new crushing low with their headline: ‘Why it’s OK to laugh at United’.

Australian news outlet, Fox Sports, meanwhile, spoke of United’s ’86-year low in HORROR 4-0 flop’ and American outlet, Sporting News, did an in-depth analysis of the numbers behind historically bad Premier League form.

Pulse Sports Nigeria also posted some of the best reactions from Nigerians on social media after United’s defeat.

One fan said: ‘If I was Ronaldo, I won’t return to training after this match. My agent must work for his money and find a way to take me out of this disgrace before the window closes. God forbid bad thing.

Another posted: ‘I feel ZERO sympathy for United fans. They deserve what they’re going through at the moment, loud and proud all these years, always annoying everyone. They are paying for their crimes under Ferguson.

A third added: ‘Banter aside. What the heck is wrong with Manchester United?’

It’s no surprise either, that pundits were all unanimous in their disappointment in United – with club legend Gary Neville pointing the blame at the club’s owners the Glazer family, saying they should carry much of the burden for a ‘toxic’ period in the last 10 years that has seen little investment and no clear plan for the club going forward.

Neville told Sky Sports: ‘I think those players to be fair, Eriksen was new, Martinez was new. Its very difficult to be a 5ft 9in centre-back away at Brentford. I can’t believe it was eight or nine months ago that [former boss Ralf] Rangnick said United needed open heart surgery.

‘No one wants to take their money, they can’t spend the money because no one wants to come here. It’s a massive football club it’s the biggest thing in my life. I couldn’t be more proud to support Manchester United. But it is desperate now.

‘There is a family in America that is letting his employees take the blame. They need to get on a plane to Manchester and explain what the plan is. We never will have the Glazers here.’

Neville then insisted the Sky punditry team of himself, Redknapp and former England star Karen Carney along with presenter Kelly Cates could hypothetically spend the same amount of money the Glazer family have on United just by the money generated by the club.

He continued: ‘The only money that has been spent on players has been generated by the club. The Glazers have borrowed and used the revenue the club generates through its amazing fanbase.

‘Us four could buy the club tomorrow and spend the same money. I was a footballer at the club I would die for the club. My point is there has been a toxic culture at this club for the last 10 years since Alex Ferguson and David Gill left. It’s a mess. And it cannot continue to go on.

‘The embedded failure over a ten-year period has to come back to the owner. I blamed [Ed] Woodward for a long time but the Glazers left him in situ. They haven’t dealt with the football ground which is rusting.

‘They need a billon for the stadium and probably a few hundred million for the training facilities. They were cash rich a few years ago now they’re struggling. Something has to give.’

However, fellow pundit Jamie Redknapp believes the responsibility for United’s defeat lies with Ten Hag.

Speaking at half-time, Redknapp told Sky Sports: ‘I don’t think I’ve ever seen a half quite like this. Brentford have just been too strong for United. Someone has got to take responsibility.

‘I cannot believe what I am watching. They’ve got the badge on but they look like they’ve just been thrown out there. The manager has made mistakes. Eriksen cannot play in defensive midfield and Martinez is not strong enough.’

Jamie Redknapp claimed that Ten Hag was misusing Christian Eriksen throughout the match

He later added: ‘Martinez will not able to compete in this league. He might be ok in the Dutch league but here every weakness you have is exploited here. He played Eriksen as a false nine last week and then his week he’s a deep lying midfielder.

‘He’ll need time to settle in. He could still be a good midfielder he’s good technically, but I don’t think he can be a good centre back in the Premier League.’

Redknapp’s criticism of Eriksen was validated by the fact the Dane was caught in possession on the edge of his area by Mathias Jensen, who capitalised by then firing home the Bees’ second goal.

Redknapp also took aim at United’s new signing Lisandro Martinez, who was easily beaten to the ball for Ben Mee’s goal.

The Argentinian defender was hooked at half-time as Ten Hag looked to find a way back into the game – at which point Redknapp suggested that Martinez is ‘not strong enough’.

Match of the Day host Gary Lineker lambasted United too and could not hide his criticism of David de Gea after his ‘absolute howler’ to let in the first goal.

Lineker continued to lambast United and their first half performance at the Brentford Community Stadium, calling the 4-0 scoreline ‘extraordinary’ and that even by Manchester United’s standard’s the goals were woeful to concede.

Sportsmail columnist Danny Murphy also took issue with Ten Hag, claiming he got it wrong with his selection and if he wants to play out from the back then he needs a new goalkeeper.

His column stated: ‘If Erik ten Hag wants United to play out from the back, he needs a goalkeeper who can do it. That is not David De Gea.

‘When Pep Guardiola arrived at Manchester City, he knew what he wanted. Everyone loved Joe Hart, he achieved so much for the club, but Guardiola knew he could not play his way. That’s why he brought in Ederson.

‘De Gea is a fantastic goalkeeper, irrespective of his two glaring errors at Brentford, but he is not comfortable enough on the ball.

‘It was Christian Eriksen who lost the ball for Brentford’s second goal but De Gea should never have passed to him. And, anyway, Eriksen should never have been in that position. What Ten Hag can legislate for is playing people in their right positions and picking a team to suit the opposition.

‘And Ten Hag picked a team short in height that was never going to cope at set plays with the tall, physical Brentford players. Lisandro Martinez is going to cause United real problems in that regard. Opposition sides will single him out.’

The Manchester United Supporters Trust were also keen to make their voices heard after their side’s performance in the 4-0 defeat to Thomas Frank’s Bees – and laid the blame at the feet of the Glazer family.

MUST have labelled the result as ‘an embarrassment – no, a humiliation’ after United conceded four goals in the first 35 minutes in a dismal showing in west London.

The statement calls for fans to unite amid a period of instability and claims that ‘the owners are primarily responsible for our decade of decline’.

The statement read: ‘We don’t normally comment on matches but extraordinary times call for a different approach…

‘What we have witnessed tonight is an embarrassment – no, a humiliation – for Manchester United fans. And yet in many ways it was not a surprise. It feels like the culmination of a long-term direction of travel.

‘MUST hold the owners of the Club primarily responsible for this new low in our decade of decline. Sir Alex papered over the cracks, but since 2013 the consequences of our owners has been plain to see.

‘On behalf of Manchester United fans everywhere, we demand urgent and radical change. And we as fans – all of us – need to stick together. Fans unity, with one voice aimed at the owners and the club, is needed more than ever right now.

‘Finally, as the fans in the ground today showed, we will always support the shirts. Support the team, and defend the club. Our flag is deepest red, and we will never die.’

Fans have also vented their frustration at United – and singled out goalkeeper David de Gea following his howler – as the Spaniard let a shot from Josh Dasilva slip under his grasp to see Brentford open the scoring.

One fan said: ‘De Gea needs to be shipped to the most isolated desert’, while another called the 31-year-old a ‘disgrace’.

Another said: ‘United are a genuine disgrace and De Gea is the worst keeper in the entire league and we pay him over 300,000k a week.’

A third added: ‘Please Ten Hag, sub De Gea off. He is a disgrace. It aint 2017 anymore.’

One fan posted a comical image of a pair of goalie gloves with a giant hole in the middle, alluding to his huge blunder.

There were calls from others for the club to go out and sign Brighton keeper Robert Sanchez for £60million.

The Red Devils were 4-0 down after just 35 minutes as Josh Dasilva, Mathias Jensen, Ben Mee and Bryan Mbuemo put Ten Hag’s men to the sword.

United face Liverpool next in the Premier League and will need to hope for drastic improvements to stand any chance of ending this miserable start to the new season.

If not, they could remain pinned to the bottom of the league table for another week or two.
