New York Red Bulls are interested in signing Timo Werner who is on loan at Tottenham from RB Leipzig, Mail Sport understands.

Werner extended his loan stint with Spurs in the summer, having initially joined last January, but his second campaign at the club has fallen short of expectations.

The 28-year-old has played just 500 minutes in the Premier League this term and made 28 appearances in all competitions, scoring only once.

Werner was openly criticised by Ange Postecoglou earlier this season, having been hooked at half-time of the 1-1 draw with Rangers in the Europa League.

‘He wasn’t playing anywhere near the level he should,’ said Postecoglou. ‘When you’ve got 18-year-olds out there, it’s not acceptable to me. I said that to Timo.’

Werner previously spent a two-year spell at Chelsea but couldn’t replicate the form that earned him his eye-catching £53m move to Stamford Bridge.

He returned to RB Leipzig in 2022, where he scored 11 goals in 35 Bundesliga appearances, before moving to Tottenham in January 2024.

Any potential departure would leave Spurs short up front, however, with both Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson currently out injured.

Werner is also unavailable due to a hamstring issue sustained in the FA Cup victory over Tamworth, and a return date has not been confirmed.

Postecoglou believes the club are ‘playing with fire’ if they don’t recruit this month.

‘I’m not out there trying to find opportunities for the club,’ said Postecoglou. ‘That’s not my role at this time. There isn’t the time to do it.

‘But I have daily communication with Johan (Lange, technical director) and he’s trying everything he can to get the help we need.

‘I don’t think I’m stating anything other than the obvious and for me to come in here and say something else would be disingenuous.

‘This playing group needs help, there’s no doubt about that.

‘We’re playing with fire by not bringing anyone in but the flip side is that the club are doing everything in their power to try and change that situation.’
