  • Here, Mail Sport breaks down all you need to know about deadline day

The January transfer window has been an unusually busy one for Premier League clubs this year, with numerous teams looking to strengthen for the second half of the season.

Arguably the biggest deal of the window so far has seen Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr – meaning he will link up with Cristiano Ronaldo – for a reported £71million.

It has resulted in Unai Emery’s side looking at a potential loan deal for Marcus Rashford, who has been frozen of Ruben Amorim’s recent Manchester United squads.

Tottenham have also been looking to bring in reinforcements amid an injury crisis, while their north London rivals Arsenal may look to add a striker owing to the long-term absences of attackers Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus.

So, what date does the window close this year? What time is the transfer deadline and are clubs able to bring in players on loan after the deadline has passed.

What date does the January transfer window close?

This year, the January transfer window closes on the unusual date of Monday February 3, so that the window can align with the window dates of other leagues.

Although the January transfer window previously shut in February when 31 January was over a weekend, this year marks the latest date that such a window has closed.

The windows in Italy’s Serie A and the Portuguese Primeira Liga shut on February 4, while it closes in Turkey on February 11.

This means that clubs from these leagues will be able to sign players from the Premier League, but English teams can no longer bring players in after February 3.

Other leagues have windows that started later in January, meaning that their closing dates extend into February and March.

The transfer window will shut on Monday evening at 11pm, after which Premier League clubs cannot make any more permanent transfers until the summer.

Players can also be signed as free agents by teams if they are out of contract this summer, which is most notably the case for Liverpool trio Mohamed Salah, Virgil Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Players who are already free agents can sign for a team at any point, even outside of the window, because they do not have a contract with another club.

Can you loan players after the transfer deadline?

When it comes to loans, they must be made within the deadline in order for a deal sheet to be processed – which registers a loanee with his new club and allows him to appear for them in league matches.

However, even if you sign a player on loan, a player may not be eligible to appear in a cup competition should they have been previously registered with their parent club.

Premier League clubs may not register more than two players on loan at any one time.
