Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola blasted officials after a second handball controversy in four days saw his team dumped out of the League Cup.

The Cherries had wasted several opportunities to score before Jarrod Bowen’s 88th minute winner handed Julen Lopetegui a late birthday present, but replays showed the ball hit the forward’s elbow before hitting the back of the net. With VAR not in use at this stage of the competition, the goal was not able to be overturned.

It comes days after VAR controversially disallowed Dango Ouattara’s winning goal for handball against Newcastle.

‘You think that it’s impossible that something else happens after the week we’ve had but it has happened again, it’s even more clear, no?’ a furious Iraola said.

‘I don’t know what to say. It’s obvious that we are not making these mistakes but we are paying the consequences this is very, very obvious.

‘We are out of the competition because of a mistake of a referee. They scored with an arm. I don’t know what we have to do to change something. It’s costing us a lot.

‘It’s not that VAR has no mistakes, we’ve seen it very recently. It’s not about VAR, it’s about taking the correct decisions.’

The crowd of 47,381 at the London Stadium was the highest for a game at this stage of the competition since 1981, but those in attendance had little to get excited for the majority of this game.

Both teams struggled to get going in the first half, with the first real chance falling to the hosts five minutes before the break. Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s driving run and cut-back found Bowen, but he could only flick the ball on to Niclas Fullkrug, who was unable to get a shot away.

Ouattara nearly produced what would have been a stunning goal seconds before the half-time whistle, but his improvised flick from James Hill’s cross was well saved by Lukasz Fabianski.

Crysensio Summerville nearly broke the deadlock immediately after the re-start, but his curling effort flew just wide of the far post. Bournemouth started to get on top and had a flurry of chances, with Evanilson going close before Marcus Tavernier sent a free-kick against the crossbar.

The visitors continued to pile on pressure but without reward, as Evanilson was the next to hit the woodwork with a shot from a tight angle.

The Hammers finally produced a quality move when Lucas Paqueta played a chipped pass to Bowen, who found Mohammed Kudus on the right. His shot was heading goalwards before it deflected off Bowen and over a helpless Neto.
