Israeli tanks roll into Rafah for the first time amid global outrage

Israeli tanks have rolled into the centre of Rafah for the first time following global outrage over the refugee camp airstrike which saw 45 people killed as an encampment for displaced Palestinians burned to ashes. Gaza health authorities said yesterday that another tent camp in the city had been hit, this time by Israeli tank shells, in an area Israel designated as a civilian evacuation zone. They said at least 21 people were killed in the attack, including women and children. The IDF denied striking the area of al-Mawasi, west of Rafah. Meanwhile, witnesses reported seeing the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) tanks advancing into central areas of Rafah - three weeks after the army launched a ground operation in the southern Gazan city.

Emmanuel Macron calls for immediate ceasefire in Gaza

European leaders have roundly condemned Israel's airstrike on Rafah overnight on Sunday which saw some 45 people killed as an encampment for displaced Palestinians burned to ashes. Israel's Defence Forces (IDF) yesterday declared they had launched a 'precise strike' on a Hamas compound and killed two high-ranking Hamas officials. But the bombs whipped up a ferocious blaze that tore through tents in the Tel al-Sultan neighbourhood, leaving dozens with no escape.

Israel says horror tent camp blaze was not caused by IDF strikes alone

The Israeli army has claimed that a devastating fire that killed 45 people as tanks and airstrikes pounded the southern Gazan city of Rafah over the weekend could not have been caused by its own strikes alone but possibly a second, separate explosion. Horrifying scenes on Sunday showed a blazing hellscape following airstrikes near tents for displaced Palestinians in a designated safe zone, with most of the victims women, children and the elderly, according to local health officials. The strike was the deadliest incident in Rafah, where many hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have been sheltering following displacement from devastated population centres, since the beginning of Israel's offensive in May.
